Our blackbookers to follow from racing on August 13 with the Blackbook.com.au team assembling their runners to follow from Belmont, Caulfield, Eagle Farm, Morphettville & Rosehill.
BELMONT
Race 8 - Western Temple (fourth): Trainer Peter Fernie has this veteran flying, a galloper with no 1200m form, but has performed well both first and second-up over this trip. Sent out at a big price in the Bolton Sprint, he was about the run of the race on July 27 and that was arguably the case here again, sticking on despite a very wide run throughout.
Race 9 - Reign Of Fire (fifth): Willing to forgive the second-up effort from this five-year-old, who was absolutely bolting on the turn, but failed to let down on a Heavy 10. It's worth noting that Reign Of Fire has been well backed in both starts this prep, despite having no 1000m form via his return, so is clearly doing well at home. Worth another chance.
CAULFIELD
Race 5 - Millane (third): One of only two horses to break 33-seconds for last 600m for the entire card, this colt is well on track for the Golden Rose over 1400m. He was an impressive debut winner by Zoustar, so one thing we know is that he can sprint and should still get further, meaning the 1400m further into the campaign should be picture perfect.
Race 6 - I’mlovinya (third) & Waltz On By (sixth): The former was the eye-catcher, flying down the outside to finish a very nice fourth. She will improve over a touch further and second-up last prep, was a winner down the Flemington straight. Next up is the Atlantic Jewel Stakes at Moonee Valley where she can sling off that bend with all the momentum.
Waltz On By looked to be coasting into the race at the 300m before being totally closed off for a run. A checkered passage all the way down the straight deserves to be forgiven, as she could well have won the race, so can be followed next start.
EAGLE FARM
Race 6 - Hamilton Hill (second): A great effort from this $18 chance, making runs along the inside which was not where the momentum was in this race. This mare was a winner at Toowoomba previously, so she is racing in good form and given that this was a no metro wins race, she will likely find herself in one of these again next start and prove hard to beat.
Race 9 - Zou De Moon (third): Although he wouldn’t have won, he would have made it interesting with his momentum halted at a key stage around the bend. He kept coming at the line and was only beaten just over two lengths with two swoopers getting the better of him. We learnt that city grade is definitely not out of his grasp
MORPHETTVILLE
Race 7 - Royal Mile (seventh): Resuming over 1200m, he was the least suited runner in the field over this journey, but it was a solid return nonetheless. Off the bit at the 500m and losing ground, Royal Mile has picked up again in the last 100m, which should top him off nicely for perhaps a tilt at the Penny Edition (1400m) en route to a Balaklava Cup (1600m).
Race 8 - Stadium Of Light (fourth): Caught the eye on debut over 1400m and was contesting this BM60 over a mile at start two as a maiden runner. He was a long way off them and although raced keenly in the middle stages, was able to balance up and finish off strongly. Has a turn-of-foot for a middle-distance runner and should eat up 2000m in time.
ROSEHILL
Race 4 - Dalchini (fourth): For a mare that has 1400m-1600m written all over her, the 1100m and 1200m efforts in some handy sprints gives her an ideal platform for the prep. She just peaked late first-up on a wide run and despite lacking the turn-of-foot at this trip, Dalchini did stick to the task. Would love to see her come back to a BM78 with a claim.
Race 7 - Monfelicity (fourth): Interestingly, this mare holds a nomination for the 2400m BM78 this Saturday, but with a very low rating and still lightly raced, there's a stack of options around after that. Caught behind a wall of runners until the 250m, a run then did look to present, but she was kept in a pocket by the stablemate and winner. Should've won.
