Steve Bennett picks out his blackbookers and horses to follow from Saturday racing at Randwick on 14 February.

Race 2: BM72 Midway Hcp (1000m) – Mal Coupe

The Hawkesbury-based galloper resumed off a six-month absence on Saturday and made it four-straight wins when he easily accounted for this event.

James McDonald settled him outside the leader where he travelled sweetly to the turn before taking over on straightening and from there, never looked in any danger as he crossed the line more than a length clear in the end.

A winner when second-up last preparation, he has come back in top-shelf form and should be kept safe for at least his next couple of outings.

Race 3: Two-year-old Plate (1100m) – Ciaron’s Star

Appropriately named, the Ciaron Maher-trained galloper was impressive on Saturday  when second-up she accounted for her rivals in this event.

Parked at the leader’s girth to the turn, Tommy Berry then asked her for a final effort and she delivered, going on to win by almost a length, under total control of the finish.

The filly’s opening quote of $101 for the Golden Slipper has quickly disappeared and is now reading $26 with Ladbrokes and based on this effort, it could shorten even more as the big day in March draws closer.

Race 10: BM88 (1300m) – Bunker Hut

The Michael Freedman-trained galloper resumed after almost six months in the paddock and put in a big effort on Saturday when finishing a close-up third in the BM88 contest.

The was plenty of support for the Savabeel gelding ($15 into $9) where he was box-seating on settling and as the leaders drifted off the fence, Jace McMurray steered him through the gap, then inside the final 100m, looked the winner but was out-bobbed on the line, beaten a long neck in the end.

Boasting strong second-up and third-up efforts in the past, he looks a likely improver from the race and is well worth following in his current preparation.
