Who were the eyecatchers, who should you add to your black book for upcoming races and meetings and who do we recommended following in the weeks and months ahead?
Race 4: Free Carry
The first of four winners on Saturday for the Tony Gollan stable, the Bon Hoffa gelding resumed off a 16-week break and led all the way, winning the BM78 event by almost three lengths on the line.
Patiently ridden by Emily Lang, she set a moderate pace early and in the run home, had plenty left on the tank and went on to score comfortably in the end.
Already a two-time winner when second-up, stick with him for a few more yet.
Race 6: Calypso Rocket
The Marc Quinn-trained gelding made his racing debut on Saturday and while completely unwanted in the market ($41), turned plenty of heads with his last to (near) first performance in the Three-Year-Old Hcp.
Slowly away, he settled last of the nine runners, spotting the leaders six lengths approaching the turn. The newcomer weaved his way through traffic in the run home and once he saw daylight, Damien Thornton drove him to the line where he passed all but the winner, taking home the silver medal in the race.
A most impressive debut effort and he looks a real promising type who isn’t far away from his first win.
Race 8: Zelgaria
The Matt Dunn-trained gelding was second-upon Saturday and showed a ton of improvement when a fast finishing third in the No Metro Wins event over 1200m.
Drawn wide in gate 9 (of 12), he settled mid-field (off the track) before taking the turn as the widest runner and while never a real chance of victory, still ran home gamely to grab the last podium spot, taking home the minor prize in the event.
After covering more ground that the early explorers, his second-up efforts were duly noted and already a two-time winner when second-up, the wise move will be to keep him safe for his next couple of outings.
