Who were the eyecatchers, who should you add to your black book for upcoming races and meetings and who do we recommended following in the weeks and months ahead?
Race 1: Two-Year-Old Hcp (1050m) – La Bella Queen
After winning a Dalby trial by 3.5 lengths, the Nicholas Beck-trained filly faced the starter for the first time on Saturday where she franked that trial win in the first of the day, leading all the way with Tiff Brooker in the saddle.
Just like she did at Dalby, the filly had the front running on settling and dictated the speed from the outset, then in the run home, found another gear and after just a couple of slaps with the whip, she ran away from them to score by almost two lengths on the line.
Sired by Jonker and out of a Foxwedge mare, she appears to have plenty of upside and a very bright future from what we have seen to date.
Race 5: Three-Year-Old Hcp (1350m) – Kickup Rocky
The Desleigh Forster-trained gelding was second-up on Saturday and after saluting on fresh legs, he was even more impressive when taking out this event.
Last and three-wide on settling, he was never on the track, then in the run home, he was the widest runner and despite carrying top-weight (60.5kgs), he still proved too strong for them in the end, winning by 1.5 lengths on the line.
It appears the 17-week break did the trick so stick with him for now.
Race 6: No Metro Wins Hcp (1200m) – Scheherazade
The Stehpen McLean-trained mare resumed on Saturday after 18 weeks off the scene and was impressive when finishing a close-up second in this event.
From barrier eight, she settled worse than mid-field and caught three-deep to the turn before scouting even wider in search of clean air, then in the run home, she was the widest of all and put in a mighty effort to cross the line just half a length from victory that day.
With wins when second and third-up already on her resume, it will pay to keep her safe this preparation.
