Race 7: No.9 Winning Ovation
The Tony Cruz-trained galloper is high flying this time in and ticks enough boxes here to suggest he can claim a fifth Sha Tin victory in this event.
Last start, the British-sired gelding came off another big win on this track when he in his first black-type race and wasn’t disgraced when finishing fifth in the Group 3 Lion Rock Trophy, here over 1600m.
Settling second on the fence, he continued to haunt the race leader to the turn before easing out to mount a challenge and in the run home, half the field fought it out which saw the four-year-old miss a podium finish (for only the second time in seven starts here), beaten just half a length on the line with Zac Purton in the saddle.
Facing Group 3 company again, he draws gate nine and maps to push forward and settle near the speed with Joao Moreira as the new pilot.
Returning to the 1400m trip, he is at peak fitness tonight and down 3kgs on his last run, the track specialist looks set to bounce back and figure in the finish of this contest.
Race 9: No.10 Nautical Force
The John Size-trained galloper is third-up tonight and coming off two recent trials, looks well placed here to lay down a serious challenge for the major prize in this event.
Last start, the Irish-bred gelding came off a first-up win and facing top-grade competition for the first time, did well to finish fourth in the Group 3 Queen Mother Memorial Cup, here over 2400m.
From the outside gate, he settled at the tail of the field before coming off heels on the turn, then in the run home, did well to finish just behind the placegetters.
A Vet’s exam after the race identified a medical issue and since then he has trialled successfully, in preparation for this event.
Dropping back to the 1800m here, he maps to settle back in the field from gate six with Karis Teetan backing-up for the ride.
Already a track and trip winner and fitter for two runs back, he drops 4kgs from his last run and lines-up here a serious contender for the main prize.
Race 11: No.3 Cool Boy
Jamie Richards saddles-up Cool Boy here who has shown plenty of promise from his seven career starts and looks set to go on with it in this event.
Last start, the well-bred Per Incanto gelding drew another bad gate and finished fifth in a Class 3 Hcp, here over 1200m with James Orman aboard.
From the outside gate (14), he settles last in the field spotting the leaders more than a dozen lengths before scouting wide on the turn, then still seeing them all passing the 300m mark, hit the line hard, arriving in time to grab fifth prize, beaten just over a length in the end.
Finally landing a decent draw tonight, he jumps from gate three and maps to settle near mid-field, a lot closer to the speed as Orman sticks with him for this assignment.
The step-up to the 1400m looks ideal at this stage of his preparation and with a trouble-free run here, he should prove hard to hold out in this contest.
