Race 5: No.4 Hello Captain
The Chris Waller-trained galloper is high-flying with three wins from his five career starts to date and looks set to add another gold medal to his collection in this event.
Last start, the French-sired gelding was shooting for the hat-trick when he missed his first podium finish, passing the post in fourth place in a BM72 over 1300m at Randwick.
Nash Rawiller settled him three pairs back on the fence to the turn, then was kept boxed-in to the 200m mark and had to be eased before crossing off heels and couldn’t make up the ground in time, finishing just half a length from the winner in the end.
From gate seven, he maps to settle mid-field or better and off the fence with Siena Grima taking over in the saddle.
Meeting similar company here, he carries less weight after the claim and with conditions to suit, the three-year-old gets his chance to atone for that unlucky last start result.
Race 6: No.5 Polyglot
Michael Freedman saddles-up Polyglot here who is second-up and ticks all the boxes that suggest he is the one to beat in this event.
Last start, the Lonhro gelding resumed off a 14-week spell and in need of the run, finished unplaced in a BM78 over 1000m at Randwick.
From gate 10 (of 13), he settled back in the run before tracking wide on the turn, then after being held-up, he secured clean air and over the final 100m, finished strongly, beaten less than two lengths over the line.
Drawn better here in gate six, he maps to settle near mid-field with Tim Clark aboard for the first time.
Yet to miss a podium finish in six starts over the track and distance and already a winner when second-up, the four-year-old meets similar company here and looks a serious threat in this contest.
Race 9: No.7 Whinchat
The David Pfieffer-trained galloper is third-up here and shows signs of further improvement in this event.
Last start, the Russian Revolution gelding put in a bold effort when second-up by beating all but one home in the Listed Civic Stakes over 1400m at Randwick.
Drawn the carpark in gate 13 (of 15), Jay Ford pushed forward and eventually found the front and trying to lead from barrier to box, almost stole it, but was run down late by the race favourite (Midnight Dynamite).
He meets the same galloper 3kgs better here and from barrier eight, maps to cross and settle just behind the speed with Ford retaining the ride.
Fitter for those two runs and already a winner when third-up, he measures up as a worthwhile each-way chance in this contest.
