Race 3: No.6 Whiskey Miss
The Casino-based galloper is high-flying after two starts back and looks set to make her track debut a winning one in this event.
Last start, the well-bred Pierro mare was second-up when she clobbered her rivals in a BM50 Hcp over 1200m on her home track.
With everything against her that day, she drew the outside gate (10) and carrying 60.5kgs, Ben Looker settled her mid-field to the turn, then in the run home, took advantage of a yawning gap that opened up and gathered in the front runners, going on to score by almost three lengths on the line.
Facing Class 2 company here, she draws wide again in gate 11 (of 12) and maps to settle back in the field with Looker retaining the ride for this assignment.
Fitter for those two runs back and dropping 5.5kgs here, the five-year-old looks a genuine winning chance in this contest.
Race 5: No.6 Haley’s Rocket
The John Shelton-trained galloper has found her mojo this time in and looks set in the conditions today for back-to-back success in this event.
Last start, the Written By mare found her best form fourth-up when she claimed victory in a BM58 over 1100m at Grafton.
From gate nine (of 14), Mikalya Weir settled her better than mid-field to the turn before tracking wide on the turn, then in the run home, finished too strong for them and crossing the line almost a length clear in the end.
From gate seven, she maps to settle mid-field with Daniel Moor as the new pilot.
Facing BM58 opposition here, she has placed in a recent trial since that win and with a trouble-free run here, looks well worth an each-way ticket in this contest.
Race 7: No.4 Rock Empire
Ciaron Maher saddles-up Rock Empire here who is third-up and looks well placed to take home this year’s Cup.
Last start, the Deep Field gelding was second-up and showed plenty of improvement when he took out a BM88 over 1600m at Randwick.
Unwanted in the market ($17) after his unplaced effort first-up, he left the gates from barrier nine and trapped three-wide from the outset, settled mid-field early before pushing forward on the turn, then in the run home, found the front but was clearly headed by Narbold before fighting back and finishing best on the line to claim the gold medal for the race.
That effort puts him in good steed for this assignment where he draws barrier eight and maps to cross and settle better than mid-field with Brisbane rider Ryan Maloney booked for his first ride on the gelding.
Already a winner when third-up and coming off a city-class win, he looks the testing material for this contest.
