Mornington Racing Tips for September 17 – Farside to challenge the short priced favourite late in the day
- Bella Cinque (R6) primed to improve with fitness and inside draw.
- Volatile (R7) ready to strike if he gets clear running late.
- Farside (R8) shapes as a value chance after a strong last-start win.
Mornington racing takes place on Thursday, September 17, with a competitive provincial meeting set down for Mornington.
Here are our best bets from the meeting, which also feature in our daily selections.
Race 6 No.4- Bella Cinque
Bella Cinque shapes as an each-way player in Race 6. The locally trained mare has had two runs since switching trainers, struggling in Benchmark 70 company at Sandown in the first of those before dropping in grade and finishing runner-up behind Fileeta over 1000m at Mornington last time. She set a fast tempo out in front before tiring late but managed to hold on for second. The seven-year-old was coming off a seven-week break that day and should have improvement to come with that run under her belt, while the inside barrier gives her every chance to enjoy a favourable run.
Race 7 No.3- Volatile
Volatile has been racing well without winning, but if the breaks go his way in Race 7, he is a great chance to end a bit of a drought. The five-year-old has placed in three of his past four starts and has been luckless in a couple of those. He comes out of the same race as our previous selection, where he was chopped off at the start before struggling to find daylight from the 300m to the 100m. Despite that, he closed off with the fastest last 200m of the race to fill the minors behind Fileeta. The son of Snitzel will be ridden for luck from the inside barrier, where he is expected to drift back before unleashing his sharp finishing burst. If the gaps open up at the business end, he should be hard to hold out.
Race 8 No.8- Farside
who should be hard to beat. One that looks over the odds is last-start winner Farside from the Price/Kent Jnr camp. The four-year-old has taken a bit of time to get going but put it all together last time at Bendigo, leading all the way over 1400m to defeat Clux Star, with a decent gap back to third. He was a notable improver on benchmark figures at the same stage of his debut preparation when narrowly missing out at Seymour, and while this is a step up in grade, he looks to have further upside. The rise to 1500m should suit, and with any luck finding a nice settling position early, the son of Farnan can surprise at odds.
