Race 4: Benchmark 88 (1800m) – Mukhtalif
The Ciaron Maher-trained gelding was second-up on Saturday and racing on Rosehill soil for the first time, finished a game second in this event.
Sent out the $2.20 race-favourite, James McDonald settled him two pairs back to the turn, then in the run home took a while to wind-up and spotting the leaders too much start, was unable to bridge the gap, but finishing well enough to grab second prize on the line.
The former Irish galloper wasn’t disgraced in his second-up efforts and boasting seven podium finishes from his nine starts to date, he certainly appears to be one to watch in future middle to long distance racing.
Race 6: Ming Dynasty Quality (Group.3) (1400m) – Tenenbaum
The Brad Widdup-trained colt was second-up on Saturday and did well to finish third in this Group 3 affair.
With Chad Schofield aboard, he settled mid-field but was trapped three-deep to the turn, then finished strongly down the middle of the track and arrived in time to grab the minor prize, beaten less than a length on the line.
Already a winner of two races from his five appearances to date, he will strip even fitter next start and it will pay to keep him safe for now.
Race 10: Benchmark 88 Hcp (1200m) – Theblade
The Team Hawkes-trained gelding was fresh off a 17-week spell on Saturday and did it in style as he claimed an impressive victory in the event.
Tyler Schiller had him settled second at the leader’s girth to the turn, then soon after took control of the race and went on to score by two lengths in the end.
Clocking 1:09.55 for the 1200m on fresh legs was a fine effort as well and with that in mind, he looks well worth following for at least a few more outings.
