Race 5: No.4 He’s Got Grunt
The Marc Chevalier-trained galloper is two starts back and looks set for back-to-back success in this event.
Last start, the Grunt gelding showed plenty of improvement off his first-up effort when he took out a Class 1 Hcp, here over 1600m.
Tyler Schiller settled him third, one off the fence to the turn, then in the run home, came off heels and finished best to grab the gold medal by a length on the line.
From gate three today, he maps to settle just behind the speed with Schiller in the saddle again.
Stepping-up to the 1800m here looks ideal for him and already a two-time winner at the track, a clear run to the line should see him hard to hold out in this contest.
Race 6: No.2 Chappy
The Chris Waller-trained galloper is second-up today and should be ready to produce his best in this event.
Last start, the Irish-sired gelding came off a 15-week break and was having his first start for the new stable when he finished down the track in a BM72 over 1400m at Rosehill.
From a wide draw, James McDonald settled him back in the field and in the run home, found the class too strong, finishing at the rear.
Down in grade and back to provincial racing today, he draws well in gate four and maps to settle just behind the speed with Tommy Berry as the new pilot.
Boasting a strong record over the 1400m and fitter for that first-up effort, a big improvement is expected here with a victory in sight in this contest.
Race 7: No.4 Mayleigh
John Sargent saddles-up Mayleigh here who is high-flying this time in and looks ideally placed to go on with it in this event.
Last start, the Exceedance mare came off her maiden win and beat all but one home in a Class 1 Hcp over 1600m at Kembla Grange.
Jean Van Overmeire had her box-seating on settling to the turn, then on straightening she came off heels and chased the leader all the way home but was unable to bridge the gap, taking home second prize on the day.
Dropping back to the 1400m here, she gets the gun-run from gate one and maps to settle near mid-field with plenty of early speed in the race.
Tommy Berry has the reins for the first time and at her peak today, the four-year-old looks a serious competitor in this contest.
