Race 2: No.13 Metalart
The Kelly Schweida-trained Metalart gains a start here and boasting a glowing resume, looks a serious contender here at good odds.
Last start, the well-bred Better Than Ready gelding was second-up when he easily accounted for a BM85 field over 1110m at Doomben.
He settled back in the field before securing a split in the run home where he finished best to cross one length clear in the end.
He faces Listed company here for the first time where he draws well in gate five with regular rider Michael Rodd back in the saddle.
Already a two-time winner at the track and a winner when third-up previously, a trouble-free run here can see him challenging for victory again in this contest.
Race 8: No.8 Pinito
James Cummings saddles-up Pinito here who is yet to miss a podium finish in ten career starts and looks well placed here to keep that record intact in this event.
Last start, the Trapeze Artist filly broke a run of minor placings when she destroyed her rivals in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) at the Gold Coast.
Jason Collett was in charge that day and in the wet and gloomy conditions, settled the filly last of the 13 runners before circling the field nearing the turn, then taking charge on straightening and running away with the race, crossing the line more than three lengths clear of the runner-up.
The three-year-old returns to Queensland and back on the Eagle Farm track (where she finished second in Listed company two starts back), with Collett in the saddle again.
Drawn wide in gate 11, she maps to settle back in the field again as she tackles the 2200m journey for the first time.
The filly has proven herself to date and looks right up to this challenge.
Race 9: No.3 Statuario
The Victorian galloper sees ‘the Farm’ for the first time here but is in great form of late and looks a genuine winning chance on this event.
Last start, the D'argento gelding came off a win in Listed company at Caulfield when he made the trip across the border to Adelaide and did well to beat all but one home in the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) at Morphettville.
John Allen (who has been on board for the last three starts), settled him near mid-field before tracking wide on the turn in search of clean air and finished strongly, just missing out on the major prize on the line.
He comes off a four-week freshen-up here with John Allen making the trip north with him and from gate five, maps to settle in a similar position as last start.
Now five starts into this preparation, he should be at his peak for this and with a trouble-free run, can take home the Derby trophy.
