Race 6 No. 3- The Black Cloud
The Black Cloud should be hard to beat in Race 6. The Joseph Pride mare makes another sojourn down south and resumed at Canterbury on June 9 when she hit the line with 50m to go, only to be bloused late by World Alliance. She went 6.8 lengths faster than standard benchmark, which is the best last start figures of any runner in this race. She will strip fitter for this assignment and was a winner at her only other run in Melbourne with that coming at Flemington. A winner of three from seven at the distance, she was unlucky when second up at his stage last time. The possibility of a Soft track will play right into her hands and she has the early speed to find a spot up front with the 2kg claimer, Thomas Prebble, to ride.
Race 7 No.7- Talbragar
Talbragar shapes as an each-way player in Race 7. The lightly raced seven-year-old has had a few injury hiccups over the years but showed a bit last time to suggest he is ready to produce. Stepping out over the 1000m at Sandown on June 14 for his second run of his current preparation, he took a while to get going from the back-half before producing some excellent late splits. The Julius Sandhu-trained galloper comes into this third up and was a six-length improver on benchmark figures at this stage when a close 4th behind Chorlton Lane in a solid form race at Caulfield. With a cleaner getaway in this race, he can feature in the finish.
Race 9 No.2- Oscar’s Fortune
Been a while in between drinks for Oscar’s Fortune but the former Perth galloper can chalk up his first win since coming over to Victoria. He was tried over the 1600m for the first time on May 31 and just ran out of steam late when 6th behind Jimmy The Bear. Form over the 1400m in his two starts prior to that was fairly genuine. He had excuses when having to work extremely hard early on at Sandown from barrier 12, going more than 14 lengths faster than standard until the 600m before sticking on for 5th behind Magnaspin. At his start prior to that he was 3rd at the track and trip behind War Machine and Jimmy The Bear. War Machine then went on to take out the BRC Sprint (1350m) and the Group 1 Stradbroke (1400m) in Queensland, while Jimmy The Bear has claimed two of his past three. Oscar’s Fortune draws barrier 1 for this assignment and should have plenty of energy left in the tank this time around.
