Race 1: No.7 Questionable
Rod Northam saddles-up Questionable here who is high-flying after four starts back and looks set for back-to-back success in this event.
Last start the Stratum Star mare continued her run of improvement when she knocked-up her second career win by taking out a BM58 Hcp over 2200m at Dubbo.
A known back-marker, she jumped from gate 11 (of 13) with Clay Gallagher settling her just behind the speed one off the fence to the turn where she came off heels and took control on straightening, then in the run home, simply out-stayed them all, crossing the line almost two lengths clear in the end.
Facing similar company here, she jumps from gate nine and maps to settle back in the field with Gallagher in the saddle again.
On a seven-day back-up today, her only start at the track saw the mare break through for maiden win and with a trouble-free run today, she can make it two from two at the track in this contest.
Race 6: No.5 Sipping Shamus
The Rod Northam-trained galloper is second-up today and down in grade here looks a strong winning chance in this event.
Last start, the Shamus Award gelding resumed after almost six months off the scene and in need of the run, finished unplaced in a Class 3 Hcp over 1200m at Scone.
Reece Jones settled him near mid-field to the turn, then sticking to the inside he secured a rails run and ran home gamely but lacking race fitness, weakened over the final 100m to finish three lengths from the winner in the end.
Facing BM66 company here, he draws ideally in gate two, he maps to settle just behind the speed with Aaron Bullock as the new pilot.
Both career wins have come over 1400m (with one of those victories coming on this track) so the step-up in trip today looks ideal.
Already a winner when second-up, the five-year-old have the credentials to be considered a real winning chance in this contest.
Race 7: No.2 Not Written Off
The Cameron Crockett-trained galloper is in top-shelf form of late and looks well placed here for a shot at the hat-trick in this event.
Last start, the Written By mare came off a came off a BM74 win on this track when she franked that effort by returning here and up in grade, took out a BM82 over 1000m with Rory Hutchings aboard.
From gate five, she crossed to be box-seating on settling to the turn where she came off the leader’s heels and soon after straightening, took control and went on to score an impressive win by more than a length on the line.
Ideally drawn in gate two today, she maps to be box-seating again on settling with Hutchings retaining the ride for this assignment.
Coming off an eight-week let-up, she has kept her fitness by taking out an 800m trial at Muswellbrook and with a similar run in transit today, the six-year-old looks the testing material in this contest.
