Wodonga racing takes place on Monday, August 17, with a competitive country meeting set down for Wodonga.

Here are our best bets from the meeting, which also feature in our daily selections.

Race 1 No.3- Brilliant Bull Ant


Brilliant Bull Ant can break the Maiden in the opener at his 12th career start. The Benalla galloper has come close in recent times, finishing runner-up in two of his past three, including one in a harder race than this at Sandown two starts ago behind French Accord, going a very respectable three lengths faster than standard benchmark. Worth noting that the 5th horse home out of that has since picked up a Maiden at Ballarat by nearly four lengths. Brilliant Bull Ant has since had the one start, when running on from the back of the field off a slow tempo for 4th at Bendigo. He has a bit of a habit of being slow out of the blocks but the tempo should be sufficient enough to set things up for him with the likes of Smart King in action, while he will enjoy a track that is likely to be in the Soft to Heavy range. 

Race 4 No.6- Ashina


Ashina is another one that can break the duck after a number of attempts. The four-year-old has had the eight starts for three minor placings and should be primed coming into this third up after some encouraging performances over shorter trips at Ballarat and Geelong to kick off her current campaign. She tackled the 1700m at Geelong last time and was back after drawing wide then reeled off the fastest splits from the 800m to the 200m before just peaking late. Her best figures came at 2000m and beyond at her debut prep and this does look to be a very weak race. 

Race 7 No.2- Hughie


Happy to be on Hughie in Race 7. The seven-year-old will be out to make it back to back wins and put on an absolute clinic at Casterton last time in a 0-56 race, demolishing his rivals by 10 lengths. He showed promise as a youngster before battling in a number of runs last year. But the Soft to Heavy tracks seems to be his go and he is the only runner in this field to go faster than standard benchmark figures at their most recent start. He has the gate speed to handle the wide barrier and, with any luck crossing over early on, he should be right amongst it at the business end.
