Race 3: No.2 Magic Merlin
The Team Cavanough-trained galloper is high-flying after four starts back and looks a big chance of victory in this event.
Last start, the Irish-sired gelding was finally rewarded for his consistency when he broke through for his first win by taking out a Maiden Plate over 1500m at Muswellbrook.
Mitchell Bell settled him mid-field before tracking wide on the turn, then in the run home, gathered in the leading bunch and finished too strong for them in the end.
From gate seven today, he maps to settle near mid-field with Bell steering the ship again.
The step-up to the 1700m looks ideal for him now and at his peak today, he looks in the mix for back-to-back success in this contest.
Race 4: No.9 Bees Knees
The Wayne Wilkes-trained galloper has impressed after just two career starts and looks well placed here to go on with it at odds in this event.
Last start, the Super One mare improved off her debut minor placing when she claimed victory in a Maiden Plate over 1000m at Quirindi.
On a Soft 7 that day, she was box-seating on settling before coming off heels on the turn, then Olivia Dalton switched back to the inside, scored a dream rails-run and finished best to collect the big prize in the race.
Rising to Class 1 competition today, she has drawn wide in gate 10 and maps to settle back in the field with Jeff Penza as the new pilot for this assignment.
Fitter for those two runs and down in weight today, just a little luck in running can see the four-year-old figure in the finish.
Race 6: No.6 Varuni
Team Archibald saddle-up Varuni here who is yet to miss a podium finish and second-up today ticks the right boxes that suggest she is the one to beat in this event.
Last start, the Tagaloa mare resumed after 10 months off the scene and picked-up where she left off by taking out a BM58 Hcp over 1280m at Muswellbrook.
Rory Hutchings settled her mid-field on the fence before peeling off heels on the turn, then tracking wide on straightening, she came down the centre of the track and had too many guns for them in the run home, crossing the line more than a length clear with plenty to spare.
Today, she gets the gun-run from gate one and drops in weight as she takes on BM66 company with Hutchings in the saddle again.
In winning form and fitter for that first-up win, everything points to her bringing up the hat-trick in this contest.
