Race 1: Two-Year-Old Hcp (1100m) – Lorax
The Chris Waller-trained colt resumed off a 22-week break and having just his second race start, really impressed when finishing third in this event.
Slowly away, he eventually settled last of the ten runners and could still see them all as they straightened when he came off heels and finished strongly down the centre of the track, arriving in time to grab that minor prize as a $19 outsider.
He will only improve off that run and front-up a fitter and more experienced galloper at his next start.
Race 8: Benchmark 88 Hcp (1600m) – Rock Empire
The Ciaron Maher-trained gelding was second-up on Saturday and impressed when he fought back to win this event with Adam Hyeronimus in the saddle.
Settling mid-field between runners, he came off heels on the turn and soon after took the lead before being clearly headed by the Chris Waller-trained Narbold, but he found another gear inside the final 50m and fought back to grab the gold medal right on the line.
The $17 chance showed plenty of fight, second-up over the mile trip and already a winner when third-up, it should pay to stick with him this preparation.
Race 9: Benchmark 88 Hcp (1100m) – Hawker Hall
The Kris Lees-trained gelding came off a 19-week spell on Saturday and put in a mighty effort to lead from barrier to box in this event.
On fresh legs, he flew the gates to lead on settling and was parked one off the fence to the turn, then passing the 300m mark, found another gear and put two lengths on them before coming under pressure over the final 50 metres, but hung on gamely to win.
He has now scored six times from his 14 starts and has won second and third-up previously so it is advisable to find a spot in the black book for the Russian Revolution four-year-old.
