- Race 1: Class 3 Plate (1000m) – Lim’s Shavano
- Race 7: Class 4 Hcp (1400m) – Fukubana
- Race 9: BM70 Hcp (1200m) – Tiz Worthy
Who were the eyecatchers, who should you add to your black book for upcoming races and meetings and who do we recommended following in the weeks and months ahead?
Race 1: Class 3 Plate (1000m) – Lim’s Shavano
The Kelly Schweida-trained gelding resumed on Saturday off a nine-month absence and caught the eye when a fast finishing second in this race.
Cejay Graham settled him mid-field one off the fence to the turn, then on the run home had to weave through traffic before finding clean air where he hit the line strongly and arrived in time to collect second prize as a $41 outsider.
Already a winner when second-up, the former Hong Kong galloper looks a genuine improver and it may pay to stick with him for now.
Race 7: Class 4 Hcp (1400m) – Fukubana
Second-up and carrying top weight of 60.5kgs, the Matt Dunn-trained gelding impressed with a big win on Saturday.
Anna Roper was in the saddle that day and had the Dundeel-sired galloper parked second-last, six lengths off the lead to the turn, before hooking him wide on straightening and although still five lengths from the leader inside the last 300m, still finished too strong for them, crossing the line almost two lengths clear in the end.
Now a three-time winner when second-up, he has come back at the top of his game and looks set to go on with it from here.
Race 9: BM70 Hcp (1200m) – Tiz Worthy
The David Vandyke-trained mare was second-up on Saturday and really caught the eye with a bold performance, finishing second in this event.
Ryan Maloney settled her second-last in the nine-strong field and was spotting the leader some eight lengths on the turn, before tracking wide and although appearing beaten to the 300m mark, she gained a second wind and stormed home to grab the silver medal, beaten less than a length at $26.
The Hanseatic-sired mare is already a winner when third-up and certainly looks like one worth following for a few more runs.
