Race 8: No.5 Sagacious Life
The Caspar Fownes-trained galloper is second-up tonight and ticks all the boxes that suggest he can get the job done in this event.
Last start, the American-bred gelding resumed after 11 weeks off the scene and did well to finish third in a Class 2 Hcp, here over 1600m.
Hugh Bowman settled him third in a fast run race before easing off the fence, then in the run home, chased hard all the way but was unable to pick up the first two across the line, collecting the minor prize in the race.
Well drawn here in gate two, he maps to settle just off the speed again with Joao Moreira back to ride, after steering him to victory previously.
Already a winner when second-up and a two-time winner at the track and distance, he looks the one to beat in this contest.
Race 9: No.4 Gold Patch
Francis Lui saddles-up Gold Patch here who resumes off a nine-week spell and looks set to make his mark in this event.
Last start, the Ardrossan gelding ended his last campaign finishing third in a Class 3 Hcp, here over 1200m.
From gate 11 (of 12), Zac Purton pushed forward and crossed to lead on settling where he set a solid pace, then in the run home, he was pressured by challengers and was outgunned in the final few strides, taking home the minor prize, beaten less than a length on the line.
Drawn in gate nine tonight, he maps to cross and settle just behind the speed with Purton in the saddle again.
Coming off a recent trial win, he is already a winner when first-up and yet to miss a podium finish in five career starts to date, looks the one to beat in this contest.
Race 11: No.6 Almighty Lightning
The Manfred Man-trained galloper is in top-shelf form and looks ideally placed here for back-to-back success in this event.
Last start, the Australian-bred gelding made it four top-two finishes in five starts when he took out a Class 3 Hcp, here over 1400m.
He drew the outside gate (14) that night where he crossed and settled mid-field, trapped wide to the turn, then scouting even wider, took over soon after straightening and was never headed from there, going on to score by more than a length on the line.
Drawn better tonight, he gets the gun-run from gate one where he maps to settle mid-field on the fence with Andrea Atzeni retaining the ride for this assignment.
He has 4.5kgs more to carry tonight, but with the form he is in currently, the three-year-old will still take plenty of beating in this contest.
