Race 5: No.4 Archie Maximus
The Matt Dunn-trained galloper is in great touch this preparation and looks well placed here to challenge for a podium finish in this event.
Last start, the Brutal gelding came off a BM62 win at the Gold Coast before finishing fourth in a Class 2 Hcp over 1400m at the same track.
In an unfamiliar role, he led on settling and defied them to the 200m mark where he weakened, finishing just behind the placegetters.
Drawn out in gate nine, he maps to cross and settle behind the early speed with Nick Heywood as the new pilot.
Dropping back to country racing today, he is a track specialist here, boasting top-two finishes from all three starts at Grafton and despite stepping-up to Class 3 company, he still looks well worth an each-way ticket in this contest.
Race 6: No.10 Mr Chaplin
Tom Charlton saddles-up Mr Chaplin here who is third-up and looks the one to beat in this year’s Cup.
Last start, the English-sired gelding came off a first-up win at Randwick when he stepped-up in grade and did well to finish a close-up third in a BM88 Hcp over 1500m at Rosehill.
He settled just behind the speed to the turn before Kerrin McEvoy eased him off heels, then in the run home, took lead before being grabbed by two better at the finish.
From barrier eight, he maps to cross and settle in the first half-dozen with McEvoy remaining aboard.
Set for this race, the four-year-old will strip even fitter after those two runs back and should prove hard to hold out in this contest.
Race 7: No.3 Sun Topaze
The Shane Everson-trained galloper returns from provincial racing here and boasting strong success at this track, looks a serious chance of finding the podium in this event.
Last start, the Adelaide gelding came off a runner-up finish in a BM82 at Ballina when he lined-up at the Gold Coast and finished unplaced in a BM58 over 1800m.
Lumping 60kgs, Courtney Bellamy took him to the lead from barrier rise where he set a solid pace, then in the run home, buckled under pressure to finish out of a place, still beaten only three lengths on the line.
Dropping back to the mile trip today, he draws nicely in gate three where speed maps have him settling mid-field and after steering him to victory twice previously, Mikayla Weir returns to ride for this assignment.
Fourth-up and at his peak here, the six-year-old has saluted twice a the track and a ticket on both totes looks like a sound investment in this contest.
