Race 3: No. 3 Alalcance
The Waterhouse & Bott-trained galloper has made a sound impression since arriving on Australian soil and looks all set here for the hat-trick in this event.
Last start, the Irish-bred mare destroyed her rivals in the Group 3 Manion Cup where she claimed victory in the 2400m contest with Tim Clark in the saddle.
Leading from barrier to box, five-year-old gave them a galloping exhibition as she crossed the line 4.5 lengths clear in the end, with plenty to spare.
She steps-up to Group 2 level here and sees the 2600m for the first time with Clark steering the ship again and from gate four, maps to be in pride of place, leading the field from barrier rise.
Nine career starts have resulted in four wins and as many runner-up finishes for the mare and in form like that, she will take catching again in this contest.
Race 5: No.1 Gallant Star
The Brett Robb-trained Gallant Star has had a perfect preparation for this and looks the one to beat in the big Final here.
Last start, the well-bred Zoustar gelding returned to work from an 18-week break and after winning three-straight barrier trials, returned to racing where he destroyed his opposition in the Country Championships Qualifier over 1400m at Coonamble.
With Jason Collett aboard, he worked his way to the front and on straightening, found another gear leaving the rest to fight out the minors as he crossed the line more than four lengths clear, eased over the final 50 metres.
The Dubbo-based galloper is a Randwick specialist with six starts at the track ending in two wins and three minor placings.
Collett remains at the helm here and from an ideal draw in gate four, he maps to settle in the first half-dozen.
Already a two-time winner when second-up and boasting that strong record at the track, he will take a ton of beating in this contest.
Race 8: No.2 Gringotts
The Ciaron Maher-trained Gringotts has been a punter’s dream boasting no less than 18 podium finishes (including 10 victories) from his 20 career starts and has all boxes ticked and glowing for this event.
Last start, the well-bred Per Incanto gelding was second-up and returned to the winner’s circle when he finished best to take out the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill.
In the weight-for-age event, he carried 59kgs that day and with Tommy Berry aboard, did enough to beat home the likes of Fangirl and Ceolwulf to claim victory in his first attempt at Group 1 level.
Back to handicap conditions here, he carries 3.5kgs less with just 55.5kgs on his back and Berry remaining in charge for the big mile race.
Nicely drawn in gate six, he maps to cross and settle in the first half-dozen, close to the speed.
He is a track and distance winner and is a three-time winner when third-up.
He can also boast about being a 1600m lover with five starts to date resulting in four victories over the trip.
Looking at his resume, he stands out as a major contestant for the big prize in this year’s Doncaster Hcp.
