Mornington racing takes place on Monday, June 8, with a program set down for Mornington.

Here are our best bets from the meeting, which also feature in our daily selections.

Race 2 No.2- Blue Shield


Blue Shield is set to break through in Race 2. The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained galloper has led at his first two starts, only to be run down late in both of those. In his most recent assignment, he tackled the 1300m and filled the exacta behind Paddypie but he did enjoy a big gap back to the rest of them. The son of Blue Point comes in with the best last start benchmark figures of any runner and should have further improvement to come, while he might get a soft time of it out in front. 

Race 3 No.2- Cavalry Girl


It was a promising first-up run by Cavalry Girl on the Caulfield Heath over the 1000m late last month and the Tom Dabernig-trained galloper can go one spot better in this race after finishing runner-up behind Saluted. She settled back in the small field but is much better when allowed to stride along, having led in the majority of her runs at her last campaign. She might have no option this time around from the wide barrier and just needs a cleaner getaway. Look for Declan Bates to push across on the daughter of Bivouac, who has had one go at the track and trip for a win early on at her last preparation. 

Race 5 No.5- Delicate Lady


Delicate Lady can turn the tables on Electric Star in Race 5. The locally trained galloper ran on to finish half a length behind that horse as the runner-up at Caulfield on May 20 but comes in 2.5kg better at the weights and should be ready to produce her best third up and out to the 1200m. She was a winner the last time she tackled the distance and draws to get the perfect trail from barrier 3. 

Race 6 No.10- Berlemont


Berlemont might just have too much class for them in Race 5. The Mick Kent-trained galloper comes out of much harder races than this and was 5th in the Mornington Guineas (1600m) two starts ago before stepping out off a five week break at a Saturday meeting at Sandown recently and placing 6th behind Siriusly Hot. He was snagged back early on a slow tempo but closed off in steady fashion. This is a sizeable drop in grade and while he might have to get back again after drawing wide, the pace looks sufficient enough for the race to set up nicely for him.
