Race 4: No.6 Humphree Bear
The Shane Everson-trained galloper has been thereabouts in all four starts this preparation and should now be ready to fire in this event.
Last start, the Calyx gelding finished fourth in a Class 3 Hcp over 1010m at Coffs Harbour.
Drawn the fence, Danny Peisley had him box-seating to the turn before securing a rails run and soon after took the lead and fought on gamely, just weakening over the final 50m to finish just behind the placegetters that day.
Drawn out in gate nine today, he maps to cross and settle better than mid-field with Jett Newman as the new pilot.
Back on home soil and at his peak after those four runs now, a trouble-free run can see him there at the finish in this contest.
Race 6: No.9 Ever So Ready
The Richard Laming-trained galloper is second-up today and looks well placed for a forward showing in this event.
Last start, the Better Than Ready gelding resumed off a 16-week spell and having his first start for the new stable, did well to finish third in a BM60 over 800m at Warwick.
On fresh legs, Matt Palmer settled him mid-field one off the fence to the turn where he initially tracked wide but on straightening, Plamer steered him back to the inside where he headed towards the fence and finished strongly to grab the minor prize, doing his best work late.
Fitter for that run back, he steps-up to a more suitable 1015m today and from gate four, maps to settle just behind the speed with Palmer in the saddle again.
Seeing the Grafton track for the first time here, he should find this Class 2 a little easier and given a clear run to the line, he looks a genuine contender in this contest.
Race 7: No.3 Star Of Winston
The Jason Reilly-trained galloper has found his mojo recently and looks set to go on with it in this event.
Last start, the Churchill gelding came off his maiden win (on this track) and followed that up by beating all but one home in a Class 1 Hcp over 1600m also on this track.
Madeline Owen settled him mid-field one off the fence to the turn where he tracked wide to find clen air, then finishing down the centre of the track, he stormed home to grab second prize, taking lengths of the leader’s advantage, beaten just half a length on the line.
Apprentice Archie McColm is the new pilot and after his claim, the gelding will carry 57kgs here where he jumps from gate seven and maps to settle mid-field or better.
In career-best form and racing on home soil again, he looks a genuine winning chance in this contest.
