Race 3 No.1- Vinrock


Vinrock shapes as an improver in Race 3. The Matt Laurie-trained galloper was a tad disappointing when resuming with a well-beaten 4th at Caulfield when resuming. He did a bit wrong that day but gets conditions to suit this time around. At his debut campaign, the son of I Am Invincible went unbeaten and improved 16 lengths on benchmark figures between his first and second runs when going from a Pakenham Maiden win over the 1200m to claim the Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) at the track and trip. He then went on to claim the Group 1 Inglis Sires (1400m) in Sydney. Mark Zahra sticks on board and strikes at 33% for the stable, providing a 58% profit on investment. 

Race 5 No.10- Athanatos


Athanatos will go very close in the Listed Tontonan Stakes (1400m). The consistent galloper has missed a placing just once in his 15 start career and resumed at Caulfield over the 1400m on August 30, placing 3rd behind Keep Your Cool. He drew wide in that race and conceded plenty of weight, settling back on a slow tempo. The Philip Stokes galloper produced the fastest splits from the 600m to the 200m before the lack of early tempo and possible race fitness, counted against. At the second run of his last campaign, the four-year-old improved seven lengths on benchmark figures, while he has performed well at Flemington in the past. He drops 7kg on his recent run and should be hard to hold out late in the piece. 

Race 8 No.5- Via Sistina


Via Sistina is a clear top pick in the feature of the day, the Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m). The champion galloper has now won seven of her past eight and showed her class when resuming with a win over the likely challenger for her throne, Aeliana. Interestingly, her worst performance since coming to Australia came in this race last year when 5th but that flop came on a Heavy track, while she has gone on in leaps and bounds since then and has dominated in other runs at Flemington. With the surface expected to be good to soft, conditions should suit perfectly, and her record second-up is exceptional — highlighted by a dominant Verry Elleegant Stakes (1600m) last autumn when improving eight lengths on benchmark figures. She has options from barrier 2 and with James McDonald in the saddle, she will take a stack of beating.
