Race 1 No.1- Legacy Bound
Legacy Bound will be hard to beat in the opener at Flemington. The Robbie Griffiths-trained galloper carries weight but does have a bit of a class edge on this lot. He is unbeaten in his two starts when first up, including a tough win at the track and trip last spring before placing 4th in the Danehill Stakes (1100m) and on the heels of Tentyris. He headed for the paddock after placing 3rd in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m). The son of Ole Kirk comes in with a couple of trials and took out the most recent of those, while he draws the right part of the track. Logan Bates rides and claims the 2kg.
Race 5 No.1- Salty Pearl
Nice race with the fillies in action at Group 2 level and Salty Pearl can go one spot better than a last start effort that saw her finish runner-up behind Sheza Alibi, who steps out as one of the favoured runners in Sydney in the Randwick Guineas. The Ciaron Maher-trained galloper heads to Flemington fir the first time and should be suited by the long straight, while her best form in the spring was over the mile. Sass Appeal is the obvious danger but might not quite get it on her own terms out in front as there looks to be a fair bit of pressure in this. Salty Pearl draws barrier 7 and will bide her time from the midfield.
Race 8 No.6- Too Darn Discreet
Willing to give Too Darn Discreet one more chance when she lines in the Matron Stakes for the mares. The four-year-old was supported late in the betting when resuming in the Frances Tressady (1400m) but could only manage 7th behind Paradise City. She is capable of much better and her best form has been over the 1600m. At Flemington, she is unbeaten in two runs over the distance and went from a 7th at Caulfield when first up over the 1400m last spring, to a win over the mile at headquarters, when improving more than four lengths on benchmark figures. All signs were positive heading into her first up run, while she draws to do little work early on from barrier 3.
Race 9 No.2- Tentyris
Tentyris is a clear top pick in the Newmarket Handicap after his explosive win in the Lightning Stakes down the Flemington straight. The three-year-old confirmed his immense potential with that performance and remains unbeaten down the straight at Flemington. While he meets My Gladiola 5kg worse at the weights under the handicap conditions, he still profiles as the horse with the most upside in the race. The son of Street Boss has the ability to settle just off the speed before building through his gears and unleashing a powerful late sprint, a pattern that suits the long Flemington straight perfectly. With a genuine tempo expected and barrier 12 allowing him to track into the race down the outside, Tentyris can take another step at Group 1 level.
