Race 6: No.4 Storm Merchant
The Matt Dunn-trained galloper is high-flying this time in and looks ideally placed here to make his track debut a winning one in this event.
Last start, the Merchant Navy gelding came off an unplaced effort at Randwick when he returned to non-metro racing and beat all but one home in a Class 2 Hcp over 1100m at Grafton.
Ridden a treat by Nash Rawiller, he was box-seating on settling to the turn, then as the leader hung-out, he scored the dream rails-run and in the run home, looked the winner but was grabbed near the line by one better on day (who had a pull in the weights as well).
Nicely drawn in gate five today, he maps to be box-seating again on settling and has Liberty Smyth aboard for the first time.
Stepping-up to Class 3 company here, he drops 2.5kgs for the assignment and in such good form this preparation, the four-year-old looks a major player in this contest.
Race 7: No.12 Perfect Justice
The John Sargent-trained galloper is in top-shelf form this campaign and despite seeing the track for the first time, still looks a major threat in this year’s Cup.
Last start, the Justify gelding made it four-straight top-two finishes when he beat all but one home in a BM78 over 1800m at Randwick.
In city-class company, Siena Grima was aboard for the fifth time and settled him mid-field but trapped three-deep without cover to the turn, then tracked wide and in the run home, looked the winner as he finished strongly but died on his run in the final 50m and had to settle for second prize, beaten half a length on the line.
Drawn better today in gate five, he maps to settle in the first half-dozen with cover and has Grima in the saddle again.
Facing non-metro company here, a clear run to the line should see him hard to hold out in this contest.
Race 8: No.5 Satin And Cash
In career-best form this preparation, the Samantha McGuren-trained galloper looks well placed here to score as she makes her track debut in this event.
Last start, the Harry Angel mare clobbered her rivals in a Class 1 Hcp over 1400m at Grafton.
Jake Bayliss settled her mid-field on the fence to the turn, then gained a split soon after straightening and in the run home took control and raced away to score by nearly two lengths on the line.
Stepping-up to Class 2 competition here, he draws well in gate five and maps to settle better than mid-field under cover with Ben Looker as the new pilot for this assignment.
At the top of her game, a trouble-free run here should see the four-year-old fighting out the finish of this contest.
