Race 2 No.9- Shadhavar
Shadhavar has been knocking on the door lately and can go one spot better than a last start performance that saw her finish runner-up behind On Display. She was unlucky in runs prior to that over the 1100m and stepped up to the seven furlongs for the first time, racing just a tad keenly on a hot tempo before sticking on and being overhauled late. The daughter of Pride Of Dubai went 7.7 lengths faster than standard benchmark last time, which is the best last start figure of any runner, while she should be right at her peak after four runs. Craig Williams sticks on board and the pair draw much better this time around in barrier 3.
Race 5 No.5- Stay Cosmic
The three-year-olds step out in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) and Stay Cosmic presents appeal as he steps up to the 1400m. The Rig from the Philip Stokes yard resumed in the McKenzie Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley earlier this month and settled back on a slow tempo, producing the fastest 400m-200m split before the lack of early speed counted against. He is always strong late in his races and narrowly missed out in the ANZAC Day Stakes (1400m) at his only go at the trip in his debut prep. He has attracted plenty of support in the early betting and Jamie Melham jumps on board. She will bide her time from barrier 7 and will be hard to hold out at the business end.
Race 7 No.9- Sir Delius
The feature is the Underwood Stakes (1800m) and I am happy to be on the race favourite, Sir Delius. The Waterhouse/Bott import has had the two runs in Australia for a dominant win at Doomben in the winter before stepping out at Randwick a fortnight ago and narrowly missing out behind Lindermann in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m), putting a gap on the likes of Vauban and Ceolwulf and going a very healthy 12.3 lengths faster than standard. The lightly raced five-year-old should only be better with the extra 200m in distance and will slide across to sit on the speed. He will be tough to get past in the straight.
Race 10 No.8- Gilded Water
The final race of the day shapes as an interesting affair with some promising types in action over the 2000m. Gilded Water might have some bigger targets in sight and was tough when resuming with a 3rd over the 1600m here late last month, carting 61.5kg and going for home early before being run down late. The Ciaron Maher-trained galloper will relish the 2000m and just needs a tiny bit of luck early on from the draw with Mark Zahra to push to the front half to find a spot.
