Race 3: No.6 Our Paladin Al
The Russell Stewart-trained galloper has missed just one podium finish in his nine career starts and doesn’t look like missing his second in this event.
Last start, the American-sired gelding came off a big second-up win in a Rating 72+ Hcp on this track over 1400m when he stepped-up to the mile and beat all but one home in similar company.
Sitting just off the speed, he peeled off heels on the turn and chased the leader all the way home, just unable to bridge the gap, beaten half a length on the line.
The stable put him over more ground here as he faces the 1800m journey with Holly Nottle as the new pilot.
He gets the gun-run from gate one and maps to do no early work, settling mid-field with cover.
The four-year-old has shown plenty of promise to date and surely just bad luck robs him of another home track victory in this contest.
Race 5: No.4 Helluva Goddess
The Paul Hunter-trained galloper has hit the ground running this time in and looks set to go on with it in this event.
Last start, the Playing God mare came off a second-up win, here in a Class 3 Hcp when she came within a whisker of making it two straight, finishing a close-up third, here over 1200m.
With regular rider Holly Nottle in the saddle, she settled mid-field early before peeling three wide on the turn and after taking the lead soon after, was run down in the closing stages by two others, beaten half a length on the line.
From barrier eight, her early gate speed has her crossing to settle in the first half-dozen with Nottle steering the ship again.
At her peak, fourth-up today, a trouble-free run here should see her fighting out the finish of this contest.
Race 7: No.4 Bold Hero
Simon Miller saddles-up Bold Hero here who is second-up and on home soil, ticks all the boxes that suggest he is the one to beat in this event.
Last start, the Rommel gelding resumed after more than 10 months off the scene and clearly in need of the run, finished unplaced in a Rating 66+ Hcp, here over 1400m.
Lacking race fitness, that was the first time he had missed the podium on his home track in four starts.
The tide can turn here as he strips fitter off that first-up run and is unbeaten in two previous second-up appearances.
Clint Johnston-Porter is the new pilot, having his first ride on the five-year-old, and from gate seven, he maps to settle back in the field where he gets the last crack at them in the run home.
A track specialist and is two from two second-up, he has the claims to suggest he is a genuine winning chance in this contest.
