Vauban and Via Sistina head the early betting markets for the 2025 Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November 4.

Vauban was sold to new connections for $2 million following a second failure in the Melbourne Cup over the 2024 Melbourne Spring Carnival with the ex-Willie Mullins-trained galloper is now prepared by the Waterhouse & Bott yard.

The seven-year-old saluted on stable debut in the Sky High Stakes, while he was unlucky following that when contesting the Group 1 Tancred Stakes and he was then spelled after his third-up showing in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

At $11 with Elitebet, Vauban is equal-favourite with Via Sistina in the market.

Via Sistina is the best horse in Australia at present, with the Yu Long-owned import recording eight Group 1 wins from her first 11 starts under Chris Waller.

After breaking the race record via an eight-length romp in the Cox Plate, the daughter of Fastnet Rock rounded out her 2024 spring campaign with a soft win in the Champions Stakes and her only big flop in Australia was on testing ground last September.

Via Sistina was terrific over the 2025 Sydney Autumn Carnival, with a third-place finish on return before recording a winning hat-trick.

Knight's Choice is $51 to go back-to-back in the Melbourne Cup, while Aeliana ($19) and Deakin ($20) have been market firmers after their successful autumn campaigns.
