Race 3: No.3 Call Me Terry
Locally-trained by Cameron Crockett, Call Me Terry is second-up today and ticks enough boxes to suggest he is a major player in this event.
Last start, the Territories gelding resumed off a 21-week break and wasn’t disgraced when finishing just behind the placegetters in a Class 2 Hcp over 1280m at Muswellbrook.
He drew the carpark in gate 12 (of 14) that day with Ash Morgan in the saddle again where he settled mid-field, three-wide without cover to the turn, the did well to finish ahead of most in fourth place, beaten just over two lengths on the line.
He jumps from barrier eight today where he maps to settle mid-field again but should manage to find some cover as Morgan sticks with him for this assignment.
Already a winner when second-up, this is his first look at his home track under race conditions.
He won his maiden over 1280m so the step-up to the 1300m today looks ideal with one run already under his belt.
Avoiding any drama here, he can figure in the finish of this contest.
Race 4: No.5 Savoca
The Paul Perry-trained Savoca is second-up today and looks every chance of going back-to-back in this event.
Last start, the Choisir gelding was fresh off a lengthy 33-week absence and showing no signs of fatigue, won a BM58 over the 900m sprint, here on a Heavy 9 with Andrew Adkins in the saddle.
He missed the start, forcing him to settle back in the 13-strong field near last on the fence.
In the run home, Adkins stuck to the inside (strangely, where the going was clearly slower), but it mattered not as he arrived in time to claim the major prize in the last stride.
He draws gate seven today and maps to settle a little closer to them in the smaller (10-horse) field with Adkins steering the ship again.
He is now a track and distance winner and has placed when second-up previously.
A better start today and a clear run to the line, he can give this contest a real shake.
Race 5: No.10 Last Frontier
Second-up today, the Cody Morgan-trained Last Frontier looks well placed (after two recent trials) to return to the winner’s circle in this event.
Last start, the Deep Field gelding resumed after almost six-months off the scene and with Braith Nock aboard, wasn’t disgraced when finishing fifth (beaten less than two lengths) in a Class 3 Hcp over 1000m at Tamworth.
He has trialled twice since, winning one and finishing a close-up second in the other.
Today, he draws gate six and maps to settle mid-field with cover as Andrew Gibbons takes the reins for the first time.
He is already a winner when second-up and has saluted at the track and distance as well.
The lightly-raced five-year-old has won three of his five career-starts to date and looks the one to beat in this contest.
Race 8: No.10 Eclair Encore
Kris Lees saddles-up Eclair Encore here who is second-up and returning to country racing, looks much better placed for a tilt at victory today.
Last start, the Maurice filly resumed off a 17-week spell where she locked horns with city class gallopers and finished fourth in the BM64 event over 1250m on the Kensington track at Randwick.
It was a big step-up from her debut at Taree and with Kerrin McEvoy aboard, she was clearly outclassed and in need of the run.
Back to the country scene today, she also drops back in grade and faces BM58 competition here with apprentice Ben Osmond as the new pilot.
She draws well in gate four and maps to be box-seating on settling.
Down in the weights and with a trouble-free run here, she may prove hard to hold out in this contest.
