Race 4: No.5 Pretty Sassy
The Joe Ible-trained galloper has improved in four starts this time in and unbeaten at Nowra, looks set to stay that way in this event.
Last start, the Star Turn mare put in her best effort this preparation when she finished fourth in a BM64 over 1500m at Kembla Grange.
Mollie Fitzgerald settled her mid-field early and in the run home, chased them all the way, beaten less than two lengths on the line.
Ideally drawn in gate two today, she maps to be box-seating on settling and after steering her to victory twice previously, Louise Day returns to steer the ship for this assignment.
Coming off an eight-week let-up (but has trialled twice since), she ticks all the boxes here that suggest she is the one to beat in this contest.
Race 6: No.5 Top Speed
Ciaron Maher saddles-up Top Speed here who is having his second race start and after an impressive first appearance, looks set to go one better in this event.
Last start, the Time To Reign gelding came off several trials and made his debut where he did well to beat all but one home in a 1000m Maiden at Canberra.
From the outside gate (10), he settled just behind the speed (three-wide with cover) before peeling off heels and chasing home the two leaders but gave them too much start and had to settle for second prize on the day.
Drawn wide again today, he maps to cross and settle in the first half-dozen with Louise Day as the new pilot and with the experience behind him now, he will strip fitter here and looks a genuine winning chance in this contest.
Race 7: No.6 Rolling Magic
The Team Freedman-trained galloper is third-up today and being set for this year’s Cup, looks well placed to get the job done.
Last start, the well-bred Per Incanto gelding made it back-to-back podium finishes in the city when he finished a close-up third in a BM72 Hcp over 1400m on the Kensington circuit at Randwick.
Josh Parr had him box-seating on settling and after being held-up briefly, found clean air inside the final 250m and ran home strongly to finish a length off the winner over the line.
Dropping back sharply in grade here, he jumps from gate seven and maps to settle in the first half-dozen with Shaun Guymer as the new pilot.
Already a winner when third-up and dropping 3.5kgs in weight today, he looks the testing material in this year’s Cup.
Race 8: No.6 Rainbow Glow
Ciaron Maher and Louise Day team-up again in this event with Rainbow Glow who is second-up and sporting a gear change, looks a serious threat to victory today.
Last start, the Snitzel filly resumed after six months off the scene and in need of the run, finished last in a BM64 over 1000m at Kembla Grange.
With Adam Farragher in the saddle, she drew the fence that day and from barrier rise, missed the jump by two lengths and raced fiercely for 200 metres before settling down and her race was over from there on.
Maher has reacted here by fitting a tongue tie for this assignment which looks an easier affair as she takes on Class 1 company at set weights.
Nicely drawn in gate three, if she can jump with them, Louise Day should have her settling better than mid-field with cover and fitter for that first-up run, she looks well worth an each-way ticket in this contest.
