The Might and Power, registered as the Caulfield Stakes, is a Group 1 event run over 2000m at Caulfield Racecourse under weight-for-age conditions.

A classic lead up race for the Cox Plate, the race has been won by some champion horses including Wakeful (1901-02), Rising Fast (1954), Might And Power (1998) and So You Think 2010.

We’ve run our keen eye across every single runner in the 2023 edition and offered and thoughts, as well as selections for the race below. Get the best odds from TopSport.

1. Alligator Blood (3)

It would be fitting if Alligator Blood could take out this race as he shows many of the attributes that Might And Power showed during his racing career.

His toughness may just be his biggest strength and he showed this with a dominant win in the Group 1 Underwood last time out at this track.

He’s finished in the top two in eight of 13 career Group 1 starts and it will take a good one to run him down.

2. Vow And Declare (8)

The Melbourne Cup winner found the line well when resuming in the Underwood to be beaten 4.5 lengths.

He found some form during the autumn and while his record second up is quite good, he simply does his best racing at Flemington.

3. Nonconformist (5)

Both runs this prep have been full of merit and the step up in distance now will suit.

Three of his six career wins have been third up from a spell and two of them have come at this track and distance.

I’m not sure how he turns the table on the favourite however and he seems the right price.

4. Alenquer (7)

Has shown his fresh runs are his best and was beaten convincingly first up in the Underwood.

Would need to produce something out of the ordinary to be competitive.

5. Hezashocker (9)

Raced four wide without cover in the Group 3 Naturalism last time out to be beaten over 16 lengths.

Had excuses but is not going well enough to be considered.

6. Just Fine (4)

Hasn’t put a hoof wrong since arriving in Australia for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.

The son of Sea The Stars is one of the most progressive horses in the entire country having won all three starts since arriving and in dominant fashion.

He won his maiden Group 1 in the Metropolitan over 2400m leading into this and although he will rise an incredible 9kg on that, the sky is the limit.

7. Forgot You (6)

Is a two-time Group 2 winner as a three-year-old but has failed to produce that form as an older horse.

Not up to this level in my opinion.

8. Lindermann (1)

Was one of the beaten brigade behind Alligator Blood in the Underwood and it’s tough to see him turning the tables at a similar weight scale.

Prefer him over 1600m.

9. Duais (10)

Has been a long time in between wins for this now six-year-old mare.

She has competed at the highest level for the majority of her career and her last win came in the Group 1 Tancred Stakes in 2022.

Chased hard in the Underwood to finish within a length of the winner and the extra distance suits.

10. Deny Knowledge (2)

Was well beaten behind Amelia’s Jewel at The Valley third up but found the line well.

Steps up to Group 1 level for the first time and I’m happy to watch and see how she performs.
