Race 2: No.3 Aspen Cowboy
The Team Rowe-trained galloper is in top-shelf form and looks well placed here for back-to-back success in this event.
Last start, the Gold Standard gelding was second-up when he took out a Class 3 Hcp over 1180m at Home Hill.
Sitting second to the turn, he did best in the run home to collect the cash, winning by a neck on the line.
Taking on his own age group here, he draws ideally in gate two and maps to be box-seating on settling with (Lethal) Lacey Morrison back for her third ride on the three-year-old.
Fitter for two runs back and already a winner at the 1300m trip, he drops 2.5kgs here and with a trouble-free run, he can make his Mackay debut a winning one in this contest.
Race 4: No.4 Got Gumption
The Zac McFarlane-trained galloper has been knocking on the door of late and down in grade today, looks a serious threat in this event.
Last start, the Tassort gelding found the podium again when he beat all but one home in a BM65 over 1400m at Townsville.
From gate seven, he blew the start and missed it by two lengths before improving to settle worse than mid-field but was caught wide to the turn, then tracking even wider, ran home strongly to grab the silver medal, finishing better than any other in the run.
The stable have removed the tongue tie for this event where he draws gate five with speed maps having him box-seating on settling.
Ben Kennedy retains the ride and at his peak today, the four-year-old should prove hard to hold out in this contest.
Race 7: No.4 Obligated
Lyle Wright saddles-up Obligated here who has been mixing his form this preparation but with the right boxes ticked, he looks a real winning chance in this event at odds.
Last start, the Lord of the Sky gelding finished last in the Lightning Hcp, here over 1100m with apprentice Mitch Goring aboard.
Lumping 61kgs (after the claim) he settled fifth of the seven runners and caught three wide to the turn before tracking even wider, then found nothing in the run home and wasn’t ridden out in the closing stages, out of contention for a podium finish.
Dropping 5kgs for this assignment, Ash Butler returns for the ride in search of his fifth win on the gelding where he gets the gun-run from gate one and maps to settle in the first half-dozen with cover.
On home soil again, his resume shows he has seven wins from his 14 starts at the track and with a cushy run in transit, he should have every chance to challenge for the big prize and looks well worth an each-way ticket in this contest.
