Caulfield Racing Tips for March 21 – Point Barrow to bounce back against the fillies

Here are our best bets from the meeting, which also features in our comprehensive coverage of racing around Australia with a total of six Group 1 races scheduled for Randwick and Caulfield. 

Point Barrow can bounce back when she lines up in the Group 3 Don Casboult Classic (1200m) for the fillies. The Freedman galloper was sent out a $2.60 favourite in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) recently and settled back but was a tad keen, working her way into it with 200m to go before just peaking late on her run as the leaders got away. She should have scope for improvement second up and this looks to be a much more suitable assignment for her, back against her own age group and sex. One of her best peformances in her career so far came at the track and trip, while she finally draws a low barrier and should settle a little closer this time around. 

Jimmysstar looks primed to make a winning return in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield. The Ciaron Maher-trained galloper was last seen winning the CF Orr Stakes (1400m) in the spring and has already proven himself as an elite first-up performer, highlighted by his Oakleigh Plate victory last autumn where he produced a figure 17.2 lengths faster than standard benchmark. That performance was particularly strong as he came from well back on a day that favoured on-speed runners, demonstrating his ability to overcome race shape. His first-up run last spring was slightly below expectations with the Everest as the longer-term target, but this preparation he is expected to be more forward in condition with the TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) a target in a few weeks. With a genuine tempo likely and a field containing multiple on-speed runners, the race should set up ideally for his powerful finishing burst and he looks the class runner capable of producing a peak performance fresh.

Going with Enamorada in the final race of the day at Caulfield. The promising four-year-old from the Ciaron Maher stables has won three of four and had a few excuses when resuming with a 5th at Sandown over the 1300m, her only blemish to date. The daughter of So You Think atoned for that at her next start, overcoming traffic in the early parts of the straight to defeat Trapdoor with those two putting a bit of a gfap on the race. Form out of that has been excellent with three of the beaten brigade going on to win their next start. Enamorada faces her toughest test to date and draws wide but is progressive and early market support indicates she can measure up. Tempo looks solid and that should suit, while if the outside lanes are the place to be later in the day, she should be hard to hold out.
