The Group 1 Caulfield Guineas is known as the stallion-making race run over 1600m at Caulfield racecourse for three-year-olds. Who will win in 2023?

First run in 1881, the race has been won by some of the best young horses in Australian racing history including Ajax (1937), Tulloch (1957), Lonhro (2001) and All Too Hard (2012).

We take a look at all of the contenders in our runner-by-runner guide. Get the latest odds from EliteBet.

1. Militarize (12)

The Chris Waller-trained Militarize has won four of his seven career race starts and three of those have been at Group 1 level.

The son of Dundeel dominated his rivals in the Sires’ Produce and then closed out his two-year-old season by winning his second Group 1 in the Champagne Classic over 1600m.

He was cramped for room at a vital stage in the Golden Rose second up but once he found clear running, he showed an incredible turn of foot from the 150m to win.

He’ll appreciate the step up in distance now and will be ready to peak.

2. Little Brose (10)

The Hayes-trained colt showed plenty of natural talent when taking out the Group 1 Blue Diamond during his two-year-old season.

All three runs this prep have been full of merit and he was simply too far back in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude last time out.

This is his first attempt at the mile and he has a tricky gate to contend with.

3. King Colorado (8)

The Maher and Eustace trained colt King Colorado is already a Group 1 winner having won the J.J Atkins during the Brisbane winter carnival.

He trialled well leading into his first up run in the Golden Rose where he was beaten just under two lengths.

The 1600m suits as does the booking of Michael Dee.

4. Steparty (7)

The undefeated Steparty tackles Group 1 company for the first time and everything that he has shown in his short racing career suggests he has the natural talent.

He won a Listed race first up at The Valley before showing an impressive turn of foot to swamp his rivals to win the Caulfield Guineas Prelude.

5. Veight (1)

Won the Group 3 McNeil Stakes here at Caulfield first up in impressive fashion, which sets the stable's sights on the race.

He’s a better horse than what he showed when finishing fifth in the Prelude and I’d love to see Damian Lane take a more forward position in running.

6. Griff (15)

The Maher and Eustace trained son of Trapeze Artists is a progressive type who has earned a chance at group 1 level through two consecutive wins.

He will be having the fifth start of this campaign so fitness will not be a concern but he will need one of Ben Melham’s best from a tricky draw.

7. Scheelite (13)

Finished within two lengths of the winner in his first two starts this prep before swamping them late in the Prelude to just miss.

Settled a long way off them upon jumping in that race and then Mark Zahra went right around them upon straightening.

He made up considerable ground late, the step up in distance looks ideal and the winkers go on for the first time.

8. Scentify (5)

Was one of the four horses in the blanket finish in the Guineas Prelude and I loved the way he fought back after looking like he was gone at the 100m.

This is the fifth run of this prep which may be a concern in just his second prep and I’m not convinced he’ll run a strong 1600m.

9. Southport Tycoon (4)

Broke through for his maiden win at Geelong in August and followed that with an impressive win at benchmark 64 level.

Got his chance in black-type company and was denied by the barest of margins in the Guineas Prelude.
Has drawn to get a nice run in transit just in behind the speed and will have every chance if good enough.

10. Wolfy (11)

Has his first start back in July and broke through for his first win at start four.

Earned his shot at a Group 1 by making it two in a row at headquarters last start with a soft win over 1400m.

This would be an incredible rise in grade and I’m worried this may all be too much in his debut prep.

11. Verdad (14)

Couldn’t have been much more impressive when scoring on debut at Bendigo by 3.5 lengths and then acquitted himself well when stepping up considerably in grade at The Valley last start.

The son of Justify was beaten less than half a length in that race at just his second career race start and he will take plenty of benefit out of that run.

12. Rock Empire (3)

Made his racing debut on the Kensington track and was dominant, scoring by 2.7 lengths over 1300m.

The son of Deep Field then stepped up in grade to tackle the Guineas Prelude where he was beaten just over three lengths.

Would need to take a big step forward to be competitive.

13. Limburg (9)

Is yet to break his maiden status in fifth career starts and looks out of his depth here.

14. Copacabana (6)

Has placed in all three career race starts but has not shown the ability to be competitive in a race of this quality.

15. The Longest Yard (2)

Nice win on debut at Bairnsdale but has been well off them in his last couple.
