Steve Bennett picks out his blackbookers and horses to follow from Saturday racing at Randwick on 6 June.

Race 1: Two-Year-Old Hcp (1100m) – Why So Hard

The Team Hawkes-trained juvenile came off three successful trials and made his racing debut on Saturday where he franked the trial form by coming from behind to take out this event.

Leaving the machine from the outside gate (11), he crossed to settle mid-field one off the fence, tracking the speed into the home straight where Tyler Schiller steered him off heels and in the run home, finished too strong for them, winning comfortably in the end.

An impressive racing debut by a smart youngster who looks to have a promising career ahead of him.

Race 6:  BM78 Hcp (1000) – Big Red Tequila

The Joe Pride-trained mare resumed off a 17-week spell on Saturday and turned plenty of heads with a solid effort in this race, beaten home only by the $2.30 race favourite in the end.

On fresh legs, she settled back near last on the fence tracking the field to the turn, then sticking to the fence, she was held up at a vital stage and once clear, the winner was off for the prize, but the mare never stopped chasing and took lengths off the winner over the final 150m, beaten just over two lengths in the end.

Four wins and three minor money finishes from nine starts to date and already a winner when second-up, the four-year-old can only improve off Saturday’s effort.

Race 7: BM94 (1300m) – Elliptical

A known middle-distance runner, the Chris Waller-trained galloper resumed after 18 weeks off the scene and over a totally unsuitable distance on Saturday, caught the eye when finishing sixth in the 14-strong field.

With Tyler Schiller in the saddle, the $91 chance left the machine from gate 12 and immediately dropped back to the tail and on settling, was more than a dozen lengths off the speed.

Still seeing them all on the turn, the Dundeel gelding weaved through traffic and in the run home, made up a ton of ground, doing his best work over the final 100m, beaten less then three lengths on the line.

The 1300m was far too short for him and he will improve with further racing. Look for him over the mile trip or longer in this preparation.
