Adam Cusworth picks out his blackbookers and horses to follow from Saturday racing at Caulfield on July 13.
Who were the eyecatchers, who should you add to your black book for upcoming races and meetings and who do we recommend following in the weeks and months ahead?
Race 2 Rogue Rocker
This guy might be one to watch over further ground. The Warrnambool based galloper stepped out in Race 2 of the day and was well back in a race that played into the hands of those that camped on the speed.
He made up some excellent ground in the straight, producing the fastest last 200m to land four lengths off El Rocko. The six-year-old has had three runs off a long break and at his last preparation he was competitive when a one-length 7th in the MCC Final (1600m) for the country gallopers at Flemington, a race worth $500,000, while he placed in a number of others.
Race 3 Manolo Bling & Kalimna Views
The two-year-old fillies featured in Race 3 of the afternoon and it was a win for the Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained Manolo Bling. The winner was making her debut and clearly has a bright future.
The best of the beaten brigade might have been the 4th placegetter, Kalimna Views. She drew wide and was forced back from the barrier on what was a very slow tempo. The John McArdle-trained galloper had to make her move a long way from home before just peaking slightly on her run at the business end, but she did produce the fastest last 600m. She was stepping up from a Pakenham Maiden win and can measure up in town.
Race 8 Recommendation
Recommendation was the most impressive winner of the day at Caulfield and is clearly one to follow with some bigger targets in mind. The Ciaron Maher-trained sprinter was resuming from a spell and lined up at Group 3 level in the John Monash Stakes.
He was sent out an easing $3.70 chance but defied the drift to take over as they cornered, running away to win by seven lengths.
The son of Shalaa went 14 lengths faster than standard benchmark, which were the best figures of the entire meeting. He is likely to tackle the Bletchingley Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on July 27 and will be hard to beat in that Group 3 race.
