Race 4: No.1 Aussie Nation
The Team Archibald-trained galloper is racing consistently this preparation and looks ideally placed here to take out this event.
Last start, the British-sired gelding made it five-straight top-two finishes when he beat all but one home in a BM64 over 2100m at Hawkesbury.
On a Heavy 8 that day, Mollie Fitzgerald had him leading on settling before picking up the tempo on the turn and in the run home looked to be holding them but was grabbed by a swooper (on the fence) right in the line, carrying 4.5kg less in the race.
Stepping-up to BM74 company here, he gets the gun-run from gate one where he maps to settle near the speed with Aaron Bullock as the new pilot.
Finishing runner-up in both heavy track appearances to date, the conditions today shouldn’t be an issue and in career-best form, he looks the testing material in this contest.
Race 5: No.3 Ollie’s Secret
The Jan Bowen-trained galloper is in great touch this time in and ticks enough boxes here to suggest he can give this event a real shake at odds today.
Last start, the Adelaide gelding made it two wins from his past three starts when he took out a BM82 over 1400m at Mudgee.
Sitting second on the leader’s heels to the turn, Mikayla Weir eased him off the fence and taking over on straightening, fought off all the challenges to claim the big prize on the line.
Meeting similar company here, he draws nicely in gate three with Weir steering the ship again for this assignment.
Already boasting nine podium finishes on wet tracks, the forecast Heavy 9 will pose as no problem for the six-year-old and bringing winning form to the track, he looks well worth an each-way ticket in this event.
Race 7: No.5 Arapawa
Team Cavanough saddle-up Arapawa here who is in good form this campaign and only has to overcome a wide draw here to be there at the finish of this event.
Last start, the Astern gelding missed by a whisker when he beat all but one to the line in a BM58 Hcp over 1250m at Gunnedah.
After settling better than mid-field, he raced ungenerously mid-race and had to be eased before making up ground on the turn then peeling wide, ran home strongly but gave the leader’s too much start, taking home the silver medal, beaten half a length on the line.
Drawn out in gate 14 today, he maps to cross and settle better than mid-field with Nick Palmer in the saddle for his third ride on the three-year-old.
Five starts back, he has found the podium on four occasions this time in and is a two-time winner on wet tracks to date.
On a seven-day back-up here, if he can cross and settle early, he should have enough in reserve to put in the big strides in the run home and figure in the finish of this contest.
