Race 2 No.1- Sonofkirk
Sonofkirk shapes as a major player in Race 2 on Friday night. The Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained galloper showed a stack of promise in his first two starts, scoring over the 1000m at Caulfield back in June before not quite measuring up to Group 3 level in a couple of runs that followed. He comes into this with seven weeks in between runs and gets back to the 1000m for the first time since his win, when going a very healthy 8.7 lengths faster than standard benchmark, which is six lengths better than what any horse in this race has produced. From barrier 5, this shapes as a bit of a confidence booster.
Race 4 No.2- Mytemptation
Mytemptation looks set to rejoin the winners list in Race 4. The lightly raced five-year-old claimed his first four starts, including a tough win at the track and trip late last year in a strong form race. He resumed in a BenchMark 78 at Caulfield last week and settled handy but was caught wide before sticking on for 4th, going 8.8 lengths faster than standard benchmark. Race should set up nicely for him from barrier 4, allowing to sit just behind the leaders. Craig Williams rides and strikes at 39% for the stable, providing a 34% profit on turnover.
Race 6 No.2- Apulia
Apulia is a bit of an unknown with the year in between runs but early market support for the five-year-old suggests he might be up for a big showing. The former Moonee Valley Vase (2040m) winner was desperately unlucky when first up in this race last year and has produced some excellent figures in his past two fresh runs. The Team Hayes-trained galloper has tuned up with a couple of trials, taking out the most recent of those, while he draws nicely in barrier 6 with Michael Dee to ride. Look for him to settle just forward of midfield and issue the challenge late in the piece.
