Race 3 – Gimcrack Stakes, Group 3 2YO Fillies (1000m) – I'm Admired 🥈 (2nd)
It can be difficult to get a firm read on the two-year-olds at this early stage of the season, but the performance of I'm Admired in the Gimcrack Stakes was certainly worth noting. The Wyong-based filly was sent around at cricket-score odds of $151 and settled back in the field before producing an eye-catching finishing burst to make up a stack of ground in the straight and fill the exacta behind Shradda. It was a promising introduction against some well-fancied juveniles, and while the winner had her measure, I'm Admired looks to have plenty of natural ability. She should take considerable improvement from the experience and will be worth following wherever she steps out next, particularly if she finds herself in something a little easier.
Race 4 – Dulcify Stakes, Listed 3YO (1600m) – Your Colour 🥉 (3rd)
Your Colour looks a promising staying filly following an encouraging third placing in the Listed Dulcify Stakes. The Chris Waller-trained three-year-old had taken a few starts to find her feet and only recently broke through for her maiden victory at Newcastle, making this a significant rise in grade. While much of the attention was on the thrilling finish between Wonka and Genesis Runner, Your Colour was doing her best work late to fill the minor placing at her first attempt over 1600m. Waller indicated before the race that he expected her to improve as the distances increased, and there was plenty in this performance to support that assessment. She has subsequently shortened in betting for the Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m) later in the spring and looks one to follow as she progresses towards longer trips.
Race 8 – Epsom Handicap, Group 1 (1600m) – Autumn Boy 👀 (7th)
Autumn Boy is worth forgiving following a luckless seventh placing as the $3.80 favourite in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap. The Chris Waller-trained galloper was buried away on the inside and never really saw daylight at a crucial stage, leaving him unable to build momentum or make a meaningful challenge in the straight. It was a frustrating watch for his supporters, particularly considering the strength of his previous form, which included three consecutive runs over 1600m and a runner-up finish behind the outstanding Sheza Alibi. Waller had been pleased with his first two runs of the campaign and expected the strong tempo of the Epsom to suit, but circumstances conspired against him. The finishing position is best overlooked, and he remains a horse worth following when he gets the opportunity to wind up in clear running.
Race 10 – Benchmark 94 (1200m) – Platinum Pantheon 🥈 (2nd)
Platinum Pantheon's frustrating run of narrow defeats continued when resuming in the final race of the day, going down by a nose to Wanaruah in another performance that deserved a better result. The talented galloper has now finished runner-up at four consecutive starts, with every defeat coming by half a length or less, including two particularly narrow margins. Poor barriers have done him few favours throughout that sequence, having drawn awkwardly in three of those outings, but he continues to race with remarkable consistency and rarely puts in a bad performance. There was plenty of discussion surrounding his latest defeat, but the fact remains that he has gone agonisingly close on four straight occasions. His time will surely come, and he is one to keep firmly in the Blackbook as he progresses further into his preparation.
