2024 Melbourne Cup Odds - Buckaroo and Vauban top the betting market for Flemington

Buckaroo is favourite to win the 2024 Melbourne Cup and give Chris Waller victory in the Race The Stops A Nation.
Buckaroo was gelded ahead of this season and the Chris Waller-trained import has been in fine form since the ultimate gear, with the six-year-old recording consecutive triumphs second and third-up before runner-up finishes in the Turnbull Stakes and Caulfield Cup.
Via Sistina bolted in with the Cox Plate by eight lengths and smashed the race record in the process, so the Turnbull Stakes form couldn't have been franked any better, while the son of Fastnet Rock was unlucky following that when narrowly beaten in the Caulfield Cup.
Despite being well beaten as favourite in the the 2023 Melbourne Cup, Irish trainer Willie Mullins is returning to Australia with Vauban ($6.50), who found winning via the Ebor Festival at York before a runner-up finish last start in the Irish St Leger.
The seven-year-old only carries half a kilo more from last year's attempt and British hoop William Buick travels for the engagement (he was aboard in his last win).
Willie Mullins also prepares Absurde ($9.50) who finished seventh in the 2023 Melbourne Cup and the gelding has been in decent form of late, which includes a 2916m Listed triumph on Auugst 31.
Sea King ($8) has been the biggest firmer in the 2024 Melbourne Cup market following his Bendigo Cup romp on Australian debut, while he also beat Onesmoothoperator ($8.50) in this year's Ebor Handicap, with the Brian Ellison-trained galloper impressing last start when saluting in the Geelong Cup.
