- Blackbook picks out the four best bets
Flemington racing takes place on Saturday, March 9, with the eight-race program on Newmarket Handicap Day.
We have the best bets picked out from across day with value selections for Flemington Racecourse including for the feature Newmarket Handicap.
Race 2: No. 2 Young Werther
Has just the three wins from 28 career starts but two of them came during his last campaign suggesting he’s going better than ever.
There’s no doubting his ability which is evident by five placings at Group 1 level from eight attempts and Flemington is his track.
Was good first up over 1600m when finishing third and he’s better second up.
Race 5: No. 3 Buenos Noches
Started very short when resuming at Group 2 level but he simply got too far back as the leaders string the field out and he ran on really well in my opinion.
He was beaten half a length to Imperatriz in the Champions Spring to close out his spring campaign at this track and distance and meets that mare 4.5kgs better at the weights.
The blinkers have been added.
Race 6: No. 5 Autumn Angel
The Moody trained filly clearly has a fair amount of natural ability and her win over Tropical Squall in the Group 3 Ethereal in the spring has been franked with that filly winning her second Group 1 last weekend.
Billy Egan gave her a shocker first up at Caulfield and has been given the boot in favour of Melbourne Cup winning hoop Mark Zahra.
She’ll benefit from that run and appreciate the step up to 1600m.
Race 7: No. 3 Amenable
Was very consistent right throughout his last campaign culminating in a fantastic effort in the Torah Handicap where he was beaten just over a length.
He’s won twice from four first up starts and I love backing a horse first up after being gelded.
Will be short but looks the most obvious.
