CF Orr Stakes Tips - Runner-by-Runner Guide for the Caulfield Group 1
- C.F Orr Stakes is a prestigious Group 1 race at Caulfield
- Top contenders include Mr Brightside, Southport Tycoon, Pinstriped
- Mr Brightside stands out for his consistent top-level performances
The C.F Orr Stakes is run over 1400m at Caulfield racecourse under weight-for-age conditions.
The Group 1 event was first run in 1925 and has been won by some champion horses including Rising Fast (1956), Saintly (1996) and Black Caviar (2012).
Another stellar field has been assembled this Saturday and our thoughts and top four selections have been outlined below.
1. Mr Brightside (8)
A winner of over $17 million in prize money from 40 career race starts, Mr Brightside is one of the most consistent horses in the entire country at the highest level of racing.
He has placed 16 times from 23 starts in Group 1 grade and has five wins from six starts over 1400m at Caulfield including this race last year.
The one to beat.
2. Southport Tycoon (2)
Secured his second Group 1 victory when resuming in the Manikato Stakes in the spring and although he failed to win another race during that campaign, he races consistently.
The Maher stable has been forthright in their plans to stretch him out during this autumn campaign and the 1400m first up looks ideal.
3. Pinstriped (10)
Just one win from eight career starts at the top level of racing but that solo win did come at this track and distance in the Memsie just last campaign.
He struggles against the top liners under weight for age conditions but he does his best racing at the start of his prep and I wouldn’t be surprised if he runs a cheeky race at nice odds.
4. Steparty (4)
Yet to win at Group 1 level but has been placed in both the Caulfield Guineas and Sir Rupert Clarke.
Was placed in his last five starts during the spring and summer months and is another that usually does his best racing fresh.
5. Another Wil (3)
A lightly raced and progressive five-year-old gelding who has eight wins on his resume from just 13 career starts.
Failed in his first attempt at Group 1 level in the Toorak but was beaten less than half a length in the Sir Rupert Clarke to close out last campaign.
This is another test under the weight-for-age scale.
6. Freedom Rally (6)
One win from 10 starts in black type races and that was in the Listed Wayne Wilson at Eagle Farm.
Beaten a narrow margin in the $2 million Five Diamonds when we last saw him in November and that form would be good enough to compete in a race of this quality.
7. Schwarz (7)
Recorded the fifth win at start 10 when resuming in the Group 2 Australia Day Stakes at The Valley beating Steparty by two lengths at level weights.
The son of Zoustar can mix his form a bit but he comes into this race off the back of his most impressive victory to date.
8. Semana (9)
She’s been a really consistent performer over her career especially against her own sex and she comes off another solid placing in the Magic Millions Snippets on the Gold Coast first up.
At her best she is capable of filling a place in a race like this but she’ll need some luck in running.
9. Super Smink (5)
The West Aussie makes her way to the east coast for the first time after a very consistent Summer carnival in Perth.
She was beaten less than a length in the Group 1 Railway Stakes and she should have some residual fitness from that campaign.
10. Private Life (1)
The Caulfield Guineas winner returns and the stable has decided to take on the older horses first up.
The son of Written Tycoon has an enormous amount of ability as evident by his flashing fourth in the Group 1 Champions Sprint down the Flemington straight at the end of the spring carnival.
This race doesn’t look any tougher than that so I can see him running a hell of a race.
