The latest slot race peaking Australian racing’s interest is The Quokka which is the thoroughbred leg of the Western Trilogy and also includes The Nullabor (harness) and The Sandgroper (greyhounds).

The Quokka takes place at Ascot racecourse and is run over 1200m under weight-for-age conditions and was won by Overpass in int’s inaugural edition last year.

Another fantastic field has been assembled for 2024 and we have gone through every runner below.

1. Overpass (6)

Came into the race first up last when scoring by the barest of margins ahead of Amelia’s Jewel, leading throughout the entire race.

Was no match for them in The Everest when he heading east but returned to Ascot to win by 1.8 lengths in the Group 1 Winterbottom during the summer.

Has drawn well and is again a leading contender.

2. King Of Sparta (4)

Couldn’t have been much more impressive when winning by two lengths on Magic MIllions day on the Gold Coast and backed that up five weeks later by winning at Group 2 level at Randwick.

Has been freshened up for a tilt at this race and five of his eight career wins have been on a good surface.

Blake Shinn can settle him just off the pace from barrier four and launch late.

3. Malkovich (2)

The second of Bjorn Baker’s runners and another that will be attempting to lead throughout the race.

He doesn’t have the same credentials as Overpass but he is a horse that is racing really well and if the pattern suits, he can run a place at a big price.

4. Triple Missile (7)

Wasn’t beaten far in a couple of Group races at Flemington during the spring carnival but seems a little out of his depth in a race of this quality.

5. Waitak (10)

Put together two impressive wins earlier this prep, one at Group 1 level in New Zealand on New Years day where he beat Bonny Lass over 1200m.

Has won twice from three goes at this distance but would need to find a new level to be competitive.

6. Saloon Bar (1)

Has been placed in 11 of 19 career race starts but was beaten in a benchmark 72 leading into this.
Prefer others.

7. Bella Nipotina (13)

Was storming home late in this race last year to only just miss and her form at the top level has been incredibly consistent since.

The knock on her is that she always seems to fine one or two better which was the case again in the TJ Smith when beaten a small margin.

There is no better form reference leading into this and fitness will not be a concern.

8. Amelia’s Jewel (12)

The hype surrounding this mare was somewhat burst during her campaign on the eastern seaboard during the spring where she was well beaten in both the Toorak Handicap and Golden Eagle.

Her record in the west in truly sensational and she has never finished outside of the top two barring those last two runs in Melbourne.

She was rolled as the short priced favourite first up but she was savaging the line late and she is again one of the leading contenders in a race she just missed in last year.

9. Ripcord (5)

Has placed in eight of nine career starts including a third behind Overpass in the Winterbottom in December.

Chased home Oscar’s Fortune first up and will take plenty of benefit out of that run.

10. Oscar’s Fortune (3)

Scored the fifth win of his short eight start career second up, beating Amelia’s Jewel by half a length on the line.

The son of Rich Enuff has been well placed during his racing career and he continues to rise to every challenge put in front of him.

It will take a brave punter to say he won’t do it again even though this is the biggest challenge he’s faced.

11. Wild Belle (11)

Closed out her last campaign with a nice win at Listed level at Pinjarra by 1.8 lengths before a nine week freshen up.

Sat just in behind the leaders at Ascot last start and pounced in the straight to make it back to back wins.

Needs to find another level but one for exotics.

12. Almighty Class (8)

Has been beaten by small margins in both runs so far this campaign at a much lower level but will be nearing peak fitness now.

13. Super Smink (14)

Is yet to miss a place in nine career starts and closed out last campaign when beaten by the barest of margins at Listed level.
Has form around some handy locals but this may be too big a rise in class at this stage of her career.

14. Petula (9)

Put together back to back wins during this prep including a Listed race at Bunbury over 1200m.
Had five weeks in between runs and was then finished just half a length off Wild Belle at Ascot over 1000m.

15. Comfort Me (15)

Has been runner up at Group 1 level twice from three attempts and although he was well beaten first up, I’ve seen worse $100 shots!

16. Red Can Man (16)

The seven-year-old gelding is having his 49th career start and he’s shown he is capable of producing a rating high enough to be competitive.

Finished 1.5 lengths off Overpass in the race last year and was just a length off Amelia’s Jewel heading into that race 12 months ago.

17. Hot Zed (17)

Has failed to place in his last seven trips to the races and the barrier does not help his chances.

18. Gemma’s Son (18)

Has a win over Oscar’s Fortune just last month and while his last couple have been below par, he’s a knockout hope for the placings.
