The Metropolitan is a race run over 2400m at Royal Randwick run under handicap conditions.
The race was first run in 1863 and has been won by some great staying horse including Ming Dynasty (1978), Railings (2005) and more recently Montefilia (2021).
We’ve run through every runner in the 2023 edition and our tips are below with odds from Midasbet.

1. Knights Order (6)
The 2022 Sydney Cup winner has won twice over 2400m and was placed in last year's Caulfield Cup.
His two runs this prep have been underwhelming but he gets out to a more suitable distance now.
Drawn well and is a better chance than his odds suggest.
2. Navajo Peak (15)
Franked his excellent second up form by winning the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes earlier this prep.
Is another that seems a ridiculous price considering his capabilities even considering this is his first go at 2400m.
3. Cleveland (13)
Finished two lengths off them in the Group 1 Tancred Stakes during his autumn campaign over 2400m at Rosehill.
He carries 4.5kgs less in this race than he did in the Tancred and is another that represents good value at his current price with the blinkers being added.
4. Major Beel (4)
Took out the Group 1 Australian Derby at this track and distance during the autumn albeit on a heavy track.
His three runs this prep have been solid and he will be ready to peak fourth up from a spell. Will appreciate the drop in weight.
5. Bois D’argent (10)
Has been a very consistent performer at a lower grade of racing, placing in 18 of his 21 career race starts.
Will need to make a big step up in grade and the market seems to have gotten his price spot on.
6. Hosier (17)
Is another that will need to have a peak performance to be competitive and barrier 17 will not help his chances.
Should be fit enough.
7. Manzoice (7)
Hasn’t placed in his last two campaigns and considering he has had five goes at Randwick without placing suggests he will struggle in a race of this quality.
8. Spirit Ridge (14)
Has placed in his last four straight, all in black type races.
The Annabel Neasham trained gelding will be fit enough and will appreciate the drop in weight.
9. Ho Ho Kahn (12)
Yet to place in three runs this prep in a much lower grade of race.
Nothing to suggest he will be competitive at Group 1 level.
10. Kalapour (3)
Fell at the 700m in the Wyong Cup and was 3.5 lengths off the winner in the Newcastle Gold Cup.
The Kris Lees trained gelding is capable but would need to find his best form to be competitive.
Drawn well and just 52.5kg to carry.
11. Torrens (11)
Has produced little to suggest he can feature.
12. Benaud (1)
Was excellent when winning the Wyong Cup and followed that up with a second in the Group 3 Kingston Town at this track.
Would prefer the sting out of the ground but with just 51.5kg, and Jamie Kah steering, he is one of the leading contenders.
13. Military Mission (18)
Broke through for his second Group 3 victory in the Newcastle Cup last time out and drops 2.5kg for this event.
The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained horse will settle on the speed and give them plenty to chase.
14. Just Fine (2)
The deserving favourite in the race on the back of impressive back to back wins.
Made his Australian racing debut by winning a benchmark 94 over 1600m by 2.6 lengths and then took out the Group 3 Kingston Town in dominant fashion.
Has had three goes at 2400m without winning and he does seem awfully short in a race with so many horses to navigate.
15. Al Aabir (8)
Was well beaten by Just Fine two back and they meet at the same weight in this event.
Came out and finished second at his next start at Group 3 level but would need to improve to beat the favourite.
16. Future History (16)
Only a lightly raced five-year-old who has finished in the top two in nine of his 14 career starts.
Was nabbed late at The Valley last start by Young Werther but will appreciate the considerable drop in weight.
17. Mr Waterville (9)
Hasn’t had a lot of luck since landing in Australia and is going better than his form on paper suggests.
He was only clear late last start at Rosehill and although this is a big step up in class, he carries no weight and has drawn well.
18. Wineglass Bay (4)
Has been working through the grades well and was beaten just 2.6 lengths in the Newcastle Gold Cup last star.
Not the roughest.
