The Everest is run over 1200m at Royal Randwick and, worth $20 million, is the richest race on turf in the world.
Since the inaugural running in 2017, the race has become one of the showcase races of the spring carnival and has been won by some champion sprinting horse including Redzel (2017,18) and Nature Strip (2021).

1. I Wish I Win (1)
Trackside Media and Peter Moody have teamed up with the sensational I Wish I Win who was favourite for the 2023 Everest before he drew the inside barrier which saw him drift in betting.
Since arriving in the Moody camp in August 2022 the son of Savabeel has won four races from eight starts and been unplaced just once.
The five-year-old gelding took out the Golden Eagle this time last year but his most impressive win came on a heavy track in the T.J Smith during the autumn.
He returned to the races with a third in the Group 1 Memsie where he was beaten half a length and has been kept fresh for this.
The inside draw is of some concern but so long as he finds clear running late, he will be storming home and is still the horse to beat.
2. Private Eye (9)
The Joe Pride trained Private Eye has just the one Group 1 victory to his name but has amassed just shy of $7 million in prize money over 28 career starts.
He finished within half a length of Giga Kick in last year’s Everest and has three wins and three placings from nine starts at Royal Randwick.
It was hard not to be impressed by his first up win in The Shorts and he will take benefit out of that run.
A similar racing pattern to I Wish I Win but will land in a better spot from barrier nine.
3. Think About It (5)
He might be a genuine sprinting champion this horse.
His win first up in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes was the 10th of his career from just 11 trips to the race tracks.
The second of the Joe Pride trained horses in the race, he progressed well through the grades before taking out back-to-back Group 1 wins during the Brisbane winter carnival.
We are about to find out where the ceiling is for this horse and if he improves only slightly from his narrow first-up win, he’ll be right in this.
4. Mazu (4)
The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Mazu has been a consistent performer throughout his career having placed in 13 of his 20-career race starts.
He finished third in The Everest in 2022, beaten under a length behind Giga Kick and was placed behind I Wish I Win in the T.J Smith Stakes during the autumn.
His last win came in the 2022 Doomben 10,000 which is of some concern but he attacked the line well first up after getting a long way back.
Looks over the odds.
5. Overpass (2)
If there is one horse that can cause a boilover in the race it may just be the Bjorn Baker-trained Overpass who has found career-best form in recent times after being gelded.
He beat home the most hyped horse in the country in Amelia’s Jewel by a narrow margin in the inaugural edition of The Quokka in April and followed that up with a second behind Giga Kick in the Doomben 10,000.
Led throughout when resuming in The Shorts where he showed incredible toughness late to just be nabbed.
Those contending for the lead are coming from wide out so I predict he gets across before them, and if he can dictate terms, he’ll take some running down.
6. Buenos Noches (8)
Secured his first Group win by taking out the Group 3 Show County Quality first up at this track and distance before placing behind Private Eye and Overpass in The Shorts.
There’s no doubting he has some ability but this may be too big a jump in grade at this stage of his career.
7. Hawaii Five Oh (10)
One of the more progressive runners in the field with scope for a lot of improvement.
Was run over late when resuming in The Shorts but just missed when savaging the line late behind Think About It in the Premiere second up.
Will look to go forward from the wide gate but he might be a few lengths off the better ones contending in the race and looks the right price.
8. Alcohol Free (7)
Is a multiple Group 1 winner overseas but hasn’t fired a shot in this country so far.
One of the only horses that I’d be happy putting a line through.
9. In Secret (12)
This may be the one people are sleeping on.
Is yet to win from two attempts so far this prep but she has placed in four of five starts at the highest level including a win against the older horses in the Newmarket Handicap during the autumn.
Her best is good enough to win and therefore she looks great each way value at her current price.
10. Espiona (3)
Has finally repaid the faith to many punters who believed her early hype and three of her six career wins have been in her last five race starts.
She broke through for her maiden Group 1 by taking out the Coolmore Classic during the autumn and comes into this event off the back of a 2.4 length win in the Group 2 Golden Pendant.
I’m unsure whether 1200m is her pet distance but she’s racing well and should get a lovely run in transit from barrier three.
11. Shinzo (6)
Was all systems go towards The Everest after winning the 2023 Golden Slipper in the autumn but a lacklustre first up run in Golden Rose is concerning.
Coolmore are confident he’s the horse and while three-year-old’s have a fantastic record in the race’s short history, I’m happy to take him on.
12. Cylinder (4)
If there is a three-year-old to win the race than it might just be this colt by Exceed And Excel.
Was beaten just over a length in the Golden Slipper as a juvenile but has returned a better horse, evident in all three runs so far this prep.
This is his first go against the older horse but he has fitness on his side, can land just behind the speed from barrier four, and the blinkers go on for the first time to sharpen him up.
13. Bella Nipotina (1st Emergency)
Is as honest as the day is long and racing really well.
Over the odds and if she gains a start I wouldn’t be surprised if she fills a placing.
14. Zapateo (2nd Emergency)
Has been consistently placing in 14 of 20 career starts but this looks beyond her.
15. King Of Sparta (3rd Emergency)
Narrowly beaten behind a smart one first up but this is another step up in grade.
16. Vilana (4th Emergency)
Two Group 2 wins but zero from four at the highest level.
