The Golden Eagle is the fourth richest race on turf in the world and is run over 1500m at Rosehill racecourse at set weight conditions for four-year-olds.

The race was first run in 2019 and has become one of the most exciting races during the spring carnival.

We have run through every horse competing in the 2023 edition and our thoughts and betting plays can be found below with best odds from Elitebet.

1. Hawaii Five Oh (4)

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott horse had placed in every one of his eight starts prior to this campaign including three wins.

Although he has failed to win again from three attempts this prep, he has not been beaten far in some quality races.

He was beaten a neck by Think About It in The Shorts before again finishing behind that horse in The Everest by just over two lengths.

Will get a lovely run in transit from barrier four and is one of the leading contenders.

2. Attrition (19)

Broke through for his maiden Group 1 victory last start in the Toorak Handicap beating home the ever consistent Antino by the barest of margins.

He will drop back to 1500m for this contest and rise 3.5kg which is a big ask and has a very tricky barrier to contend with.

3. Pericles (1)

Has been a consistent performer for the blue army, placing in nine of 12 career race starts.

James Cummings has given him an unusual prep, spacing his runs out, but he was excellent when placing in the Silver Eagle.

I’m concerned that is the right form for a race of this quality but he is capable of producing a spike performance.

4. Golden Mile (18)

There was cause for concern after his first two runs this campaign were well below the ratings he had produced earlier in his career, but he came out and won the Theo Marks impressively.

He followed that up with a narrow defeat in the Epsom Handicap where he was beaten less than half a length behind Rediener and Kovalica.

He’ll need luck in running from barrier 18 but is certainly capable.

5. Kovalica (16)

Is another that was affected by the barrier draw and will need some luck at vital stages.

This has always been his grand final and you know Chris Waller will have him spot on for this event.

He has a great turn of foot late in races and if he’s without striking distance when the heat is turned up, look out!

6. Rediener (3)

Closed his winter campaign out with back to back wins including the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic at Eagle Farm.

Carried that form over into this prep by winning his first two including the Group 1 Epsom Handicap with a lightweight.

He’s drawn really well but at set weight, I’m not sure he has the class and I’m happy to take him on.

7. Osipenko (8)

Has had four runs so far this prep for just the one placing but all of them have been at the highest level.

He was beaten just over a length in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes at this track and distance during the autumn and his best is good enough to be competitive.

Chris Waller is a great grand final trainer and he is one that could surprise at double figure odds.

8. Straight Acer (7)

Earned a shot at black type racing by winning three of his first four to start this prep and was only beaten a length behind Vienna Princess in the Silver Eagle.

This may be too big a step up in grade for him at this stage of his career.

9. Communist (12)

The 2023 Randwick Guineas winner gets his chance at the big prize money on offer and will be nearing peak fitness at this stage of his prep.

He was only beaten a length in the George Ryder back in March at this track and distance but I’m concerned he’s not going as well right now.

10. Coin Toss (17)

Won back to back Group 2 events in Singapore to close out his last campaign before changing stables to Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott for the spring.

Made his Australian racing debut in the Silver Eagle where he finished ninth and would need to improve dramatically to be a chance in a race of this quality.

11. Knights Choice (10)

Put together a nice picket fence in Queensland during the winter culminating in an impressive win in the Group 3 Winx Guineas at the Sunshine Coast.

Has been well beaten in both starts this prep in a much lower grade and is out of his depth here.

12. Obamburumai (2)

The X factor in this year’s Golden Eagle comes in the form of Japanese raider Obamburumai who has won three of his five career starts.

The Japanese horses are known for their staying prowess but this guy has a sharp turn of foot and is proven at this distance.

In one of those stakes races that he won, he was forced across heals at a vital stage before letting down to win impressively.

He represents great each way value if you are willing to trust.

13. New Endeavour (13)

Another import that has been transferred to the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott stable for the spring.

The son of New Bay had not competed in Group racing in England prior to landing on our shores and he was well beaten in the Silver Eagle on debut in Australia.

Happy to take him on.

14. Age Of Kings (11)

Has just two wins in England from seven career starts before shifting into the Chris Waller camp.

He has had two trials leading into his Australian racing debut that were less than impressive and he’s one I’m happy to take on.

15. Galeron (14)

Another import with just two wins during his career in England.

Has produced nothing to suggest he will be winning one of our richest races.

16. Amelia’s Jewel (5)

She came to the eastern seaboard with a lot of hype and backed it up by winning her first two starts this prep.

But those wins were against her own sex and she simply failed as the short priced favourite in the Toorak Handicap at Caulfield.

She is much better suited under these conditions and while there is no denying her ability, I couldn’t back her at her current price off the back of the failure.

17. Ruthless Dame (20)

The 2023 Group 1 Sangster winner is racing well and should be ready to peak at her fourth run this prep.

She was narrowly denied in The Invitation last weekend behind Espiona and that is good form leading into this event.

The barrier is a concern, as is the step up to 1500m where she has had one unplaced run during her short career.

Despite this, she does look over the odds and can surprise.

18. Legarto (6)

This daughter of Proisir is putting together an excellent racing resume having won sseven of her nine career starts.

The only time she came over the Tasman she beat the boys in the Group 1 Australian Guineas and she is a last start winner at Listed level over 1600m.

Drawn well in barrier six and looks really well placed.

19. Vienna Princess (9)

The Chris Waller trained daughter of Snitzel has won both starts this prep so far including the Silver Eagle over 1300m at Randwick.

She was beaten at this track and distance in a benchmark 88 in July and this may be a bridge too big to cross at this stage of her career.

20. Razeta (15)

Chased hard in the Silver Eagle but was still beaten over three lengths. Not for me.
