Glorious Goodwood Day 4 Tips - Darkness to be a shining light at Goodwood
- Glorious Goodwood continues on Friday
- Super Superjack, Task Force and Darkness and Believing feature in our selections
Glorious Goodwood reaches its penultimate day on Friday with the King George Qatar Stakes the headline act.
We've got our four best bets for the meeting.
Race 1 Goodwood - Goodwood Handicap
SUPER SUPERJACK came close to winning this race two years ago. Olly Murphy's recruit, then with Milton Harris, was heavily backed in the build-up, but found himself in a pocket behind a wall of runners at a crucial stage and his late charge was only good enough for second behind Master Milliner.
Like Master Milliner, Super Superjack returned from a two-year absence earlier this season, finishing fourth on his reappearance at Nottingham before a decent effort at Ascot last time out. Murphy's seven-year-old returns to Goodwood rated two pounds lower than in 2022 and Tom Marquand - who won this in 2020 - has been booked to ride.
Race 2 Goodwood - Thoroughbred Stakes
I'm not quite ready to give up on TASK FORCE, who I backed for the 2000 Guineas at the start of the season. Ralph Beckett's colt impressed over six furlongs as a juvenile, and everything in his breeding suggested that he'd be better over a mile.
Rossa Ryan's mount finished seventh in the Guineas, a result he repeated in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot, where Task Force hit the line strong five lengths adrift of Haatem. Stepping back up to a mile should suit and Ralph Beckett has fitted a tongue-tie for this assignment.
Race 3 Goodwood - Golden Mile Handicap
Johan was very much a trends-buster when he won this race 12 months ago. Horses who're drawn low, in good form and well-found in the market have an excellent recent record, and Johan ticked none of those boxes.
Money has arrived for Blue For You, Classic and Urban Sprawl after they were handed kind low draws. Another who's been drawn well is DARKNESS, who finished fourth off a three-pound higher mark 12 months ago.
David O'Meara's charge managed to get over to the rail from stall 15 and was still leading with a furlong to travel, before running out of steam late on. Darkness returns to Goodwood in good heart and quicker ground this year will play to his strengths.
PEROTTO is certainly worth backing too. Roger Varian's star has returned to form over the past 18 months, ending last season with two impressive wins and registering third-place finishes on both starts this season. Tom Marquand's mount remains on a winnable mark, will relish faster ground and boasts plenty of back form around this tricky track.
Race 4 Goodwood - King George Qatar Stakes
Connections of Desperate Hero, Kerdos and Makarova won't be unhappy with their low draws. History tells us that there's no track bias at Goodwood. However, the majority of the pace in this race has been drawn high, so those placed in low numbers could be inconvenienced.
Live In The Dream and Ponntos like to go hard from the front. Big Evs won't be too far away from the early pace. Neither will Starlust, who's unbeaten over the minimum distance. Asfoora will have every chance of repeating her Royal Ascot success. Yet, the one I'm drawn to more than anyone else is BELIEVING.
George Boughey's filly returned to Britain with a bang when powering to victory in the Achilles Stakes at Haydock. Believing recovered well after a slightly sluggish start to finish a close fourth behind Asfoora at Royal Ascot, before repeating that placing in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes later in the week.
With Ryan Moore in the saddle, Believing was much too good for her rivals in the Sapphire Stakes at the Curragh, the form of which was boosted when third-place Makarove followed up in the Coral Charge. With Moore flying out to Saratoga on Thursday, Boughey has booked Billy Loughnane for Friday's assignment and he'll be delighted with a high draw-up in stall 11.
