Flemington Racing Tips 2.11.2021 - Melbourne Cup Day
Flemington hosts a 10-race card on Tuesday, November 2, and we have our four best bets available. It's Melbourne Cup Day, so the racing is first class. The undercard features numerous races where punters get value odds, including the MSS Security Sprint.
- Race 2 11:20pm No. 8 Wil John
- Race 6 3:55pm No. 7 Bacchanalia
- Race 8 4:00pm No. 11 Promise of Success
- Race 10 5:15pm No. 10 Curran
Race 2 11:20pm No. 8 Wil John
Wil John comes off an outstanding run to win at Caulfield and that’s an excellent form guide for this contest. The staying six-year-old has now made it five wins on the bounce, and rising from 2400m to 2800m only does his chances a favour. The Maher/Eustace-trained son of Reset had the ability to drop from 4200m and 2400m, and it takes a smart horse to do that.
We’re not surprised to see strong betting support. He opened at $4 with bookmakers and is currently trading at $3.70. That is a solid betting move, and he could start much shorter on race day.
Race 6 3:55pm No. 7 Bacchanalia
We didn’t think the $13 opening quote would last long for Bacchanalia, who should get every chance to win. The James Cummings-trained gelding brings in different form to most in this race, but his third placing at Kembla Grange last start should be a good form guide. He appears to be peaking at the right time, and he hasn’t been missed in betting markets.
Having Damien Oliver in the saddle is a bonus, and he has form behind General Beau and Extreme Warrior. We think Profiteer is too short in the markets, so we’re prepared to take the value available. $9 is still a good price for a promising type.
Race 8 4:00pm No. 11 Promise of Success
Promise of Success couldn’t have been more impressive when winning at Randwick last start. The John O’Shea-trained six-year-old flashed home to score an emphatic victory, and that form stacks up nicely for this race. She has a superior turn-of-foot to most of her opposition, and although April Rain is a smart type, she could have the edge over her.
She will get a premium trip in transit from barrier three, and having James McDonald in the saddle only adds to our confidence levels. It’s her first start at Flemington, but the big track is ideal and it gives her plenty of time to warm up. Her opening odds of $2.70 have drifted, but we think betting support will come on race day.
Race 10 5:15pm No. 10 Curran
Curran did well to run third behind Oxley Road last start at Caulfield. The four-year-old was looking for more distance and he gets it here. He owns four wins and four placings from 10 starts, so he has been around the mark throughout his career. One of his wins came at this track and distance, so there are plenty of things in his favour.
Drawing barrier 11 down the straight is ideal as he should be able to get on the back of one going forward. Carrying 54kg is another positive, so everything points towards a big effort.
