- Runner-by-Runner Guide to the Epsom Handicap
- A hugely competitive edition is in store
- Who will take out the Randwick Group 1?
The Epsom Handicap is run over 1600m at Royal Randwick under Handicap conditions.
The race was first run in 1865 and has been won by some champion middle distance horses including Gunsynd (1971), Super Impose (1990,91) and Winx (2015).
We have gone through every runner in the 2023 edition and our thoughts and betting suggestions can be found below along with odds from TopSport.
18+ only. Ts and Cs apply
1. My Oberon (18)
Was beaten by the barest of margins at this track and distance in the Doncaster during the autumn before well beaten in the Champions Mile at Sha Tin.
Both runs this prep have been full of merit and is yet to miss a place in four third-up runs.
The weight and barrier are a concern but he looks value at his current price.
3. The Inevitable (8)
A consistent performer who has been placed in 21 of 31 career race starts.
Beaten less than a length in the All-Star Mile to close out last prep and was excellent first up when second being Golden Mile at Group 2 level.
Is giving a few of these some weight but is more than capable.
4. Going Global (12)
Came to Australia with plenty of hype but is yet to win in this country.
Both runs this prep have been solid but would need to take a big step forward to be competitive in a race of this quality.
5. Converge (9)
Last win came in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas way back in March 2022 and he is one that can mix his form.
Was beaten less than two lengths when resuming at Group 3 level but has placed three times from four second up starts.
6. Golden Mile (21)
The 2022 Caulfield Guineas winner is a horse that is capable of producing a rating high enough to win this.
Two very poor performances to kick start this prep was followed by a stirring win in the Group 2 Theo Marks last start and a repeat of that effort would see him competitive.
Watch the market for a guide.
7. Kirwan’s Lane (11)
Is yet to place in three career Group 1 starts and would need to improve dramatically to be winning this.
8. Hope In Your Heart (10)
The daughter of Dundeel rarely puts in a bad effort and she has finished in the top four in her last 10 consecutive race starts.
She only found clear running late in the piece when resuming in the Group 2 Tramway but she made up good ground to finish third.
One of the leading contenders.
9. Diamil (5)
He has placed in 11 of 24 career starts but is simply not going well enough to be competitive at this level.
10. Kovalica (7)
Was only plain first up in the Theo Marks but he is clearly looking for further.
Was ultra-impressive winning the Group 1 QLD Derby during the winter in Brisbane and while he will only improve on what he produces in this race, he has a fair amount of class.
11. Nugget (19)
Finished less than a length off them in the Doncaster on a heavy track to close out his autumn campaign.
Loved his first up run in the Theo Marks to be beaten just over a length and can improve with fitness.
12. Pounding (13)
Is a horse that improves the more he gets into his prep but will be fit enough at his third run.
Is capable of a rating high enough to be competitive as we saw when third in the Group 1 Australian Cup but everything would need to go right for him.
13. Communist (6)
The 2023 Randwick Guineas winner loves the 1600m and in fact has finished inside the top two in three of four starts at this track and distance.
Both runs this prep have been full of merit and he’s ready to peak third up from a spell.
Not the roughest.
14. Duke De Sessa (15)
The Maher and Eustace trained four-year-old had just two starts during his debut prep in Australia and while he failed to win, both runs were impressive at the highest level.
He has run well fresh in the past but will need some luck for a tricky draw.
15. Madame Pommery (16)
Was beaten by the barest of margins behind Pericles first up at Rosehill and was then one of the chasing brigade in the Theo Marks behind Golden Mile.
She drops 4kg on that effort but has to contend with a wide barrier.
16. Democracy Manifest (1)
The Chris Waller trained horse is one of the most progressive horses in the country his win in the Group 3 Cameron at Newcastle was truly special.
Tyler Schiller gave him an incredible ride that day and with just 51.5kgs on the back, look for him late.
17. Rediener (2)
Comes into this Group 1 event off the back of four wins in his last five race starts.
This includes an impressive win in the Group 3 Bill Ritchie at this track first up and he is being asked to carry just 50kg.
18. Barbie’s Fox (4)
Is yet to place from two Group 1 starts but did win at Listed level back in July.
Should have residual fitness from a long prep and is another with no weight on the back from a good draw.
19. Waterford (20)
Has placed in both runs this prep and eight of 11 overall.
A progressive four-year-old with a quick turn of foot who will be asked to carry just 50kg.
Will need luck from barrier 20 but could be a knockout hope.
20. Olentia (17)
The Chris Waller trained mare has won five of her eight career race starts which includes a Group 3 in April.
Gets in well at the weights but is another that will need luck from the tricky draw.
21. Williamsburg (3)
Finished second behind Cepheus at Group 2 level last start but it has been a while in between wins.
Will need a scratching to gain a start but prefer others.
22. Political Debate (22)
Hasn’t won since June 2022 and even if he gains a start, is one of the rougher chances.
