Cox Plate Tips & Runner-by-Runner Preview
Considered one of the best races in the world, the Cox Plate has attracted a stellar field on Saturday.
Names such as Zaaki, Verry Elleegant, Anamoe, and Mo'unga line up over 2040m at Moonee Valley, in what should be a momentous battle.
We look at the form of every runner in the Cox Plate.
Zaaki
The golden run of Zaaki might have come to an end last start, but the champion thoroughbred clearly didn't handle Caulield. He also didn't handle the dry track, so conditions look ideal for the drifting favourite. We think money will come for him on race day, and given his previous form, we're happy to put him on top.
Dalasan
Despite running at huge odds, it wouldn't be a massive shock to see Dalasan winning. He has run good races against tough opposition throughout his career, but he might have the turn-of-foot to keep up with some of these.
Gold Trip
We're not liking the overseas form this season. Gold Trip has only moderate form in France, and although it usually stacks up, he was beaten by Aysar, who hasn't done anything since arriving in Australia. His drifting odds could be a sign.
Callsign Mav
We don't think New Zealand form stacks up much better. He has won two Spring Carnival races in Hastings, but he was found lame in one of his legs today. That isn't a good sign, and he might be forced to scratch. If he runs, he shouldn't have much of a chance.
Mo'unga
Value odds for a smart type who owns a turn-of-foot. He carried a big weight in the Epsom and ran fifth, so there was nothing wrong with that form. Money is coming for him, so we wouldn't be leaving him out.
Verry Elleegant
She is the current Queen of the Turf, and despite a poor run last time out, she should bounce back. She loves the conditions and with 14 wins from 32 starts, punters shouldn't overlook her class. A win takes her over the $10 million mark, so she can't be left out.
Probabeel
If the rain comes, it could put an end to her chances. The Kiwi mare has form on soft tracks, but connections are hoping for a dry track. She can't be ruled out, especially after beating Zaaki last start, and the odds are generous.
State of Rest
He scored an upset win at Saratoga last start, but U.S. form is rather average. He would need to find a few lengths on his last effort, and we're not happy with the current odds. We would need $20 to entertain his chances.
Anamoe
Dropping to 49.5kg is ideal for the Guineas winner, who could be the next age-group star to win the Cox Plate. They have a good record, with So You Think, Savabeel and Shamus Award. Craig Williams rides and we're not surprised by the betting moves.
Capitvant
He was close behind Anamoe last start, and he is a nice fighting type. We wouldn't overlook his chances off the inside draw, and punters get lovely odds.
Verdict
We can't overlook Zaaki. He was the boom horse all year, and we're not going to jump off his back after one poor run.
Verry Elleegant is all class, and we expect the former Kiwi to be right around the mark. We also expect Anamoe and Mo'unga to be right there in the finish.
